I place them on equal footing.
The Rutles were obviously borne of love, or respect, of admiration.
Same for Spinal Tap.
Anyone who grew up with this music knew that both "parodies" resonated, were real, and came straight from the heart.

3. I saw the 'Che Stadium' parody before I'd even heard of Shea Stadium |

and possibly Che Guevara, for that matter. I had heard of the Beatles (I may have been 10), but I think I heard "I am the Waitress" before "I am the Walrus" (a case where the parody makes more sense that the original!)
