2. heh, i used to be a Girl Scout troop leader.
For 5 years people would unceremoniously dump their young impressionable little girls at my house.

9. That is cool
I just have to go to the meeting place, in a church, and we have 3 meetings a month, and the 4th is the pack meeting.

tonight we played flag football and taught 8 and 9 year olds to play it.

:D

18. you know people used to tease me about being troop leader, like "You?"
but i'll tell you that i really enjoyed doing it, the girls were pretty wonderful and i got to spend some really good times with them, quite frankly i think many of the parent's lost out by not showing up or showing any interest in what we were doing.

Good for you for being there for those kids and those will be some great memories for you and your son.

4. Oh how nice!
We were very active in scouts when our boys were involved with it. The other parents were all really nice and we made some good friends there. ( This could cure your "loneliness"!!! ) Plus, you are going to have a lot of fun with your son--- camping, hiking, Pinewood Derby, popcorn sales, lots of activities. :bounce:

I know about some basic not/knots, and that is essential, especially when it comes to boats and horses.

31. My ex enrolled my son in a cub scout troop...
She thinks he should pretend to believe in God so he fits in. I prefer honesty and resent BSA for putting him in a spot like this. My daughter's GS troop substitutes "Good" for "God". Any thoughts?
Also, my bf & I plan on helping out with events.

33. As in the pledge of allegiance?
My son is 8 and he attends a church with his mother. At this point in time I don't know that he's given a whole lot of thought to the idea of God, and to me the fact that he hasn't is because he attends a very liberal church that doesn't push that as much as some do. At some point it will be his decision as to what he believes.

I am not fond of the BSA at all, in fact I resent them for a number of reasons, but I am glad that they now do background checks on their volunteer leaders. I find the whole organization to be somewhat of a paramilitary organization that is wrong on their policy on gays, and is somewhat bizarre in their ultra-nationalistic approach to dealing with things. There are a couple of boy scouts that are there to be helpers for cub scouts and one of them told the group what the Pledge of Allegiance meant, and I thought I was going to puke, here's this 11 or 12 year old espousing his theology which is obviously very fundamentalistic in nature to these kids who are not paying a lick of attention anyway. It both enraged me and made me laugh.

I will participate as a leader primarily because I want to be involved in my child's life and because I don't trust much and I don't trust adults with my son unless I know them.

35. That too, but I was referring to the Boy Scout Oath
http://www.scouting.org/Media/FactSheets/02-503a.aspx
Scout Oath (or Promise)

On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.

Interestingly, the first item under "Scout Law" is TRUSTWORTHY:
"A Scout tells the truth. He keeps his promises. Honesty is part of his code of conduct."

The national organization actively excludes atheists. My son wanted so badly to join that his mother told him to lie about his beliefs in order to "fit in". This is recent and I haven't had a chance to ask him how he feels about this. Maybe I'm being too sensitive about this, but I really hate the BSA.
