So, This tomato scare is totaly Crap |
|
It sucks. I just had the best tomatoes of my life on a burger last Friday. And now I can't get more. WTF. Salmonella I can take. Lack of tomatoes, not so much.

Yes, I know, no connection. O well. I am just a little mad about the whole thing. I despise the timing.

3. I think I'll keep my tomatoes |
|
I have two tomatoes that were on the list, and I'm in VA where they said bad tomatoes would be. But whatever I'm brave, I'll cook them tomorrow. Even if I get sick I could stand to lose 3 or 4 pounds :)

6. Something I don't get about this--it's not safe if you wash them thoroughly? |
|
I thought the only salmonella threat was on the outside of the tomato, or whatever fruit/vegetable.

that tomatoes are soft and/or that they are not "acidic". I know that when you can them, you need to add citric acid to prevent botchalism and use a pressure canner. I think they are just somewhat prone to bacterial infestation.
I've been eating raw tomatoes all along, I just make sure to buy the types that aren't affected.

5. I'll be very grateful for the tomatoes from my small patch this year. |
|
The cherry tomatoes are starting to ripen at a trickle now, and we'll have some larger ones soon as well.
I think the farmers markets and organic food stores will probably still sell them.
It really is a crying shame that all those beautiful tomatoes are going to sit and rot.
It should be a matter of informed consent so far as I'm concerned.
I think the risk, for most people, is extremely low.

9. i wish they would actually report who's dying from this stuff |
|
i thought it was basically impossible to die from salmonella/ecoli etc unless you already were immune impaired in the first place? They should just put out a warning, like they do at IHOP about undercooked eggs.

It may not be likely, but anything can get ya if the metaphoric stars align. Especialy if you, like so many other Americans, don't have health care and can't really afford to get looked at if things start going wrong.
