The Brothers Johnson - "Strawberry Letter 23": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKJw1h4KQuw

The Ramones - "Do You Wanna Dance": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLlkJwPOQzw

Bonus point: What movie made prominent usage of the first song?

I think the only reason I like the cover better is 'cause I don't like the sound of the saxaphone though. :P

But I never knew that was a cover.

I pick Janis Joplin "Me and Bobby Mcgee". Kris Kristofferson's version is good but Janis owns that song.

Or Johnny Cash "What'd I Say"

9. A winner is you!

And actually, yeah, Shuggie Otis was the first to record that song, but having heard the Brothers Johnson one first, Shuggie's just sounds too "white and nerdy" (thanks Al) for my tastes.

6. Let's see here.
I have bunches of obscure bands doing obscure covers, but I'll keep it to somewhat kinda sorta known bands.

Melvins doing Flipper's "Sacrifice"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPhUqIxO7DI

Motorhead doing Metallica's "Whiplash"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wDeI2B8Pb4

Dead Kennedys doing Elvis' "Viva Las Vegas"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pklNF7uLwEM

And the single best cover I've ever heard;
The Residents doing Elvis' "Teddy Bear"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLVSn3LCJXk

Not to mention his take on "Superstition," or "Look at Little Sister," or... Basically, the guy was a master interpreter.

31. Talking of Stairway to Heaven...
Here's another cover. I'm not a big rock music fan but if you ever know who Rolf Harris is you'll understand why the idea of him doing Stairway is so funny...
