1. The Patriot's Dream
by Gordon Lightfoot.

Not exactly his biggest hit, but one of his best.

The Patriot's Dream

The songs of the wars are as old as the hills
They cling like the rust on the cold steel that kills
They tell of the boys who went down to the tracks
In a patriotic manner with the cold steel on their backs

The patriot's dream is as old as the sky
It lives in the lust of a cold callous lie
Let's drink to the men who got caught by the chill
Of the patriotic fever and the cold steel that kills

The train pulled away on that glorious night
The drummer got drunk and the bugler got tight
While the boys in the back sang a song of good cheer
While riding off to glory in the spring of their years

The patriot's dream still lives on today
It makes mothers weep and it makes lovers pray
Let's drink to the men who got caught by the chill
Of the patriotic fever and the cold steel that kills

Well there was a sad, sad lady
Weeping all night long
She received a sad, sad message
From a voice on the telephone
Her children were all sleeping
As she waited out the dawn
How could she tell those children
That their father was shot down
So she took them to her side that day
And she told them one by one
Your father was a good man ten thousand miles from home
He tried to do his duty and it took him straight to hell
He might be in some prison, I hope he's treated well

Well there was a young girl watching in the early afternoon
When she heard the name of someone who said he'd be home soon
And she wondered how they got him, but the papers did not tell
There would be no sweet reunion, there would be no wedding bells
So she took herself into her room and she turned the bed sheets down
And she cried into the silken folds of her new wedding gown
He tried to do his duty and it took him straight to hell
He might be in some prison, I hope he's treated well

Well there was an old man sitting in his mansion on the hill
And he thought of his good fortune and the time he'd yet o kill
Well he called to his wife one day, "Come sit with me awhile"
Then turning toward the sunset, he smiled a wicked smile
"Well I'd like to say I'm sorry for the sinful deeds I've done
But let me first remind you, I'm a patriotic son"
They tried to do their duty and it took 'em straight to hell
They might be in some prison, I hope they're treated well

The songs of the wars are as old as the hills
They cling like the rust on the cold steel that kills
They tell of the boys who went down to the tracks
In a patriotic manner with the cold steel on their backs

The train pulled away on that glorious night
The drummer got drunk and the bugler got tight
While the boys in the back sang a song of good cheer
While riding off to glory in the spring of their years

The patriot's dream still lives on today
It makes mothers weep and it makes lovers pray
Let's drink to the men who got caught by the chill
Of the patriotic fever and the cold steel that kills

2. Nikka Costa
At least, I think no one has heard of her.

She puts out ass-kicking, quality music. It is well-produced, but has a raw feeling. Anytime I hear a Mariah Carey song, or 3/4 of the shit they play twice an hour on the radio, I think of this artist, and how she really needs to be heard.

I like her first album best, but the second one is good, too. You know Lenny Kravitz writes for her and plays on her albums, and so does Prince?

On edit: she's great live, if you ever get the chance. I saw her at the 9:30 club about 6 or 7 years ago.

Been into them since the first I heard the EP Cloak Of Love. The new one is planted in my CD player. They opened for Pig Destroyer in a crazy ass show I saw last year.

Here's their newest video.

huge and devoted following here in Seattle during the '90s, but for some reason they never made it to the big time despite hordes of A&R reps combing Seattle for the next Nirvana. (Granted, they had very little in common with the grunge bands besides being rooted in '70s rock)

63. It sure is!
After I saw him for the first time, I was totally hooked. I got myself
an old Guild 12 string (I still have it!), and as soon as I could afford
it, I sought out the guy who made Leo's 12-string guitars, who is a Serbian
immigrant named (really, I swear!) Božo Podunavac. He has a website, if you
want to check out his work. Besides sounding like no other guitars made, they
are an optical treat as well. Božo is now 80, but he is still building guitars!
He has made about 8 guitars for me over the years, each one different, and most
of them are 12-string. Hearing Leo was like a revelation for me, and I haven't
looked back since.

62. Roy Clark-Clarence (Gatemouth) Brown collaboration
Entitled Makin' Music. Love that record. Also a band called Cowboy Jazz. One more, a band called the Payolas, before anyone had heard of them, released an album called In a Place Like This. Awesome record, sounds almost nothing like their later stuff.

Lately I've been listening to Jason Spooner, and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Not TOO obscure, but not really mainstream.

73. Poi Dog Pondering? Now there's a blast from my past...
I had one of their albums and really liked it. I need to see if they are on iTunes.

70. The Elders!
GREAT Irish music band!

They took their name because all of the other musicians consider them to be old farts.

Their music is, in their words, "ARSE KICKIN'"!
