I told my 7 year old daughter last night, presumably right after it happened, when she was getting in bed. She LOVES cats, and took it remarkably well. I will tell my 4 year old daughter this morning. Guess I don't need to tell my other cat, who was also outside at the time.

1. aw SHIT!!
so sorry. that is horrible!

word of note: it is possible to leash train cats. mine are and that is the ONLY way they are allowed to go outside. they sit by the door and patiently wait for their collars and leash and then they get tied up off the back porch.

WAY too many things can happen to kitty out on the mean streets of life.

not preaching and am TRULY sorry for your loss

8. I'm so sorry for your loss
:grouphug: (since I know everyone from DU is sad for your loss).

I'm glad your daughter is taking it well. Maybe there is another kitten out there who needs a home. Sounds like there is plenty of love to go around at your place :D

19. I just saw a thing I want for my cats
It's basically a combination of a cat-carrier and a stroller - so you can take your cats safely for walks with you.

My husband thinks I'm insane.

3. I'm SO sorry for you....
I have lost cats and it is VERY painful. Some losses I still haven't gotten over. You other kitty will miss her companion, too. I had one go suddenly, just like yours. Her brother literally keened for an hour. He had NEVER done that before, and he hasn't done it since. They KNOW, and they mourn too.

26. Same thing here
Taylor was a beautiful 1-1/2 year old white and gray cat with blue Elizabeth Taylor eyes (hence her name). One day she was having troubles breathing and was making sad little noises. We rushed her to the vet, then a specialist 45 minutes away (a trip made in 25 minutes), only to have her die. She had an enlarged heart, no treatment, and no way of knowing ahead of time.

Emily, her best friend, ran frantically around the house for a week, looking for Taylor. It was heartrending. And Emily has never been the same since; she doesn't trust people anymore, and doesn't have any cat friends among our remaining cats.

I'm very sorry for your loss - that is just terrible.

Please, PLEASE, everybody, KEEP YOUR CATS INSIDE!!!

An indoor cat lives an average of 18 years.

An outdoor cat lives an average of 2-3 years.

6. So sad, especially for the kids!
Cats have such minds of there own...sometimes it's pure luck that they survive in this world. Good luck with your 4 year old.

9. Poor kitty.
My condolences to your family. Here's a nice image I found on artistspets.com that might help soothe, called 'all cats go to heaven'...

10. Thanks everyone. I told the girls Skeezix was in kitty heaven with God,
even though we're not extremely religious people. Our christian fundy neighbor who homeschools (brainwashes) her daughter, tells my children that pets don't go to heaven cause they don't have souls. I told her that I didn't really care, but was trying to help my girls deal with the situation best as i could. That probably expalins why her daugher freaks out if she even sees a dead bug.

11. I remember a Twilight Zone episode where...
...an old farmer and his dog die simultaneously, and they go walking on the Supernatural Road until they see a man by a gate. The old man asks if this is Heaven, and the man confirms. But says dogs aren't allowed. The man gets majorly bummed, and says he'll be walking around, think of what to do and come back later. Further down the road, another man and another gate -- this one accepts dogs. It turns out the first gate led to Hell.

You could tell THAT story to your kids!

16. Oh Rose, I'm so sorry.
My baby Larry Bud died this way back in 1989, and I still miss him. He looked very much like ETA's little Quinn.

I'm sorry about your baby. :(

It's never easy losing a family friend. Always try to keep your kitties indoors if you can. None of our cats have been outdoor kitties since that happened.

Did the driver of the car bother to even stop?

Poor little cat. My three will never set foot outside the house. Too many cars, too many nasty people.

27. That's terrible.
I had a one-year old cat killed by a car once and it was totally wrenching. She was an amazingly intelligent creature whom I adored totally. She had been a house cat when I lived in the city, but I brought her to my parents' house in the country, and for a few months she was in love with her newfound freedom as an outdoors cat. But that was the end of her.

So I know how painful it is to lose even so young a cat. I'm sad for you.

29. Here's what my 4 year old had to say:
"Under the ground is cat heaven? That's the silliest thing I've ever heard."

"The world can be a dangerous place sometimes."

"Why didn't he use the sidewalk?"
