Edited on Fri Jun-13-08 11:36 AM by Breeze54
Nothing has gone right today since I saw him and just now I opened my soda and it exploded all over my new shirt and pants!! :grr: ARGH!!! He gave me two prescriptions bu t the pharmacy can't/couldn't fill it because the dolt behind the counter doesn't know what frigging #'s to put in the computer and I didn't get my 3rd 'cript because the receptionist behind the counter at my old Dr doesn't know what or where the release of records forms are and finally finds them AFTER I get back from my appointment which means I can't get the new 'script for at least a week and I'm in pain and I can't even get in to get a mammogram until SEPTEMBER!!!!!! I got 2 shots today and a blood test and the new Dr didn't even have me do a urine test and I told him my little brother was just diagnosed with Diabetes II .. :wtf: Aren't urine tests a standard check up/first visit thing? This Dr is an ass!!!

I'll look up the one you suggested. This is so aggravating!! :grr:

Thanks!

3. you need a blood sugar test for diabetes
Did they draw any blood? Did they ask you to come back for fasting blood work? Do you have any symptoms of diabetes?

Incidentally, I've quit a doctor before simply because I didn't like his attitude. No harm doing that, except that you are in pain and need care.

4. They did a blood test for cholesterol only!

I hadn't eaten since yesterday afternoon, so I was able to get a fasting blood test today but it's only for cholesterol. I also have a dermatology (not on my face) issue that needs meds and I asked the nurse if I needed a referral to a dermatologist and she must have told the Dr and then he came back in the room and proceeded to give me a frigging lecture and said, "I'll take care of it! Who said you need a dermatologist anyway? Did I say that?!" :grr: :wtf: All I did was ask about it!! What an asshole!!! And why does he need my records anyway? He didn't even look at what the problem was!!

7. regarding his reaction
Are you in an HMO? Because if you are, something called "capitation" may be driving your doctor's reaction.

Capitation means that in a particular clinic or group, the more a doctor does for a patient, the less money he/she earns. If he refers you to a specialist, he gets less money. If he orders a lot of tests, he gets less money.

Some health care coverage works under the capitation limitation. I don't know if anyone will ever admit that to a patient -- I don't think employees are allowed to discuss it.

It oughta be outlawed, IMO.

I'm a Level II ... what ever the hell that means... I believe it means I need
referrals for specialist, hence my question. I don't think what you said is the
problem. He also teaches at Harvard. I just think he has a huge case of EGO!!
My sister, the RN, found him for me. Thanks sis, NOT!!! :grr:

13. I actually had a Dr. explain that to me several years ago
We had an option at insurance renewal of an HMO or what I call a regular health insurance plan. I thought I'd ask our Dr. what he thought would be best since I was not familiar at all with HMO's and his response was very similar to what you just posted.

19. Sorry
My PCP is a numbnuts who acts the same way. Ask questions or suggest anything and he acts like I'm muscling in on his turf. I'd switch but it's the only place on a bus route that takes my insurance.

Hope your day gets better.

8. He is probably one of those who....
is smarter than hell, and knows that he is. That's fine, however, if he has no bedside manner, nothing will make up for that, no matter how smart he is. You deserve someone who will take whatever time is needed and answer all of your concerns completely.

Good luck...personally, I would switch doctors ASAP.

What's sort of funny, is when my oldest sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, my other sister, the RN, had my oldest sister go to this same group and she said, No Thanks!" after one visit because she didn't like their attitudes either and went and found her own Dr!! LOL! Maybe my RN sister just has bad judgment of Dr's? :) None of us like her choices! :P

9. Boy, can I relate to that!
A few years ago, I went looking for a doctor. I went to one doctor until I found out he wasn't able to prescribe anything for my pain when I sprained my ankle badly (he had lost his privileges to do that). Soooooo, I looked around again and thought I found a doctor. I went to the first appointment. It seemed to be going well until he said "I don't usually accept Medicare patients, but I'll take you". When he told me to go to the desk to schedule my next appointment, I said "Thanks, but I'm going to look around some more". You should have seen the look on his face! Anyway, I did find a decent doctor, finally. It took me about eight months, but all the searching paid off.

It's terrible to be in pain and not get any help for it. I don't know what the answer is, but I hope that one day in the near future, science will come up with a medication that takes care of all types of pain and doesn't addict you in the process. (I'm so terrified of becoming addicted to pain meds that I limit my activities instead of taking anything).

12. I hear you but I didn't need pain meds for this particular problem.
Edited on Fri Jun-13-08 01:08 PM by Breeze54
I need a low grade anti-biotic ... it has to be taken daily to fight this and when it flares up,
I'm very sore and it gets really bad in the heat. It's now summer and it's flaring up again...
This ass couldn't have cared less. I've been looking for Dr's but it's very difficult to find
one that's taking new patients but I'll keep looking. I'm not going back to him!! :grr:
He did give me Flexeral and Naprosyn for my neck injury but nothing for this.

23. Go back to your doctor
And tell him/her you're in pain. There are a lot of options for pain relief that don't involve narcotics - I'm on an antidepressant that I swear does wonders. Other folks I know get great results from anti-seizure meds, TENS units, acupuncture, nerve blocks, physiotherapy, etc.

This is the twenty-first century. There's should be no need to just suck it up.

10. A few years ago...
...I had a doctor that I wasn't crazy about. He always seemed to be preoccupied with his investments. As it turned out, I had actually waited on him once at a bookstore I worked at. He remembered me but I didn't recognize him at all. According to him, I'd helped him find a book on investing that he was looking for. He apparently took this to mean that I was knowledgeable about investing so he was always trying to talk to me about that when I went to see him. I would actually have to interrupt him to ask him a question about ME. Fucking jerk. I have a new doctor now who is really, really old but very attentive.

17. Dump him. Dump him NOW.
No patient deserves to be treated that way! Request your file and walk.

I went through the same thing when I was trying to get diagnosed with a thyroid problem. I went through several doctors, ob/gyns, an endocrinologist (ASSHOOOOOOOLLLEEEE), and a nutritionist (who told me to eat lots of soy--the absolute WORST thing for a thyroid condition), within several months. My dad worried that I was going to be treated like Elaine on Seinfeld--labeled a "difficult patient" and news of me transmitted through the m.d. underground.

I finally found decent care with a holistic m.d.

Hang in there, Breeze. It's a pain in the ass to find a decent doctor, but none of us can afford NOT to.

18. I'm already gone, MorningGlow!! LOL!
I'll use him to get that 3rd script. He gave me 3 refills on each of the other two, so that should last me the summer and I'll get the other one written by him and filled! He wanted to see me again in 3 months, so that gives me 3 months to find a new Dr. I don't need this crap and my blood pressure was elevated when I got there and I'll bet it was through the roof when I left!! I don't need him to make me feel even worse or have my BP go even higher. He actually made me cry and no one can usually do that! Fock him!! :grr:

20. Oh honey been there done that
Got the tear-stained shirt to prove it.

Check the intertubes--you can probably find some chit chat about good and bad docs in your area. You might even want to join Angie's List on a free trial to check out what they have listed, although they just started their doctor list, so it might not be too detailed yet.

GOOD LUCK!!! You'll find a great doctor out there, I just know it! :hi:

21. I love firing doctors
who have hideous bedside manners!

In the past year I've gotten rid of two who tried to scare the shit out of me about a GYN issue that showed up on an ultrasound.. If there's a 98% chance that my problem is benign, don't start screaming, "Cancer, cancer, cancer" at me!!

I wrote a scathing letter to one of them- that was satisfying.

Good luck, and I hope you find a good one soon.

(Bad) primary care docs are a dime a dozen. You need one that you can feel comfortable with. Sometimes you don't find out how bad they can be until a serious situation comes up and they're just not compassionate or attentive. Talk to lots of people for recommendations, sometimes that's the best way.

25. Thanks, NewEnglandGirl... good advice!
I was just getting desperate to find any Dr. and trusted and was grateful to my sister for helping me find this one but this guy is not MY guy, by any means! Not my style at all. My last Dr. is about 10 yrs older than me but like an old fashioned country Dr. and he went ahead and treated the burn on my hand from ironing, even though my insurance had lapsed and said he'd wait till I got it straightened out and he did. But I doubt this new guy would ever do that and not on a Saturday morning!! I need someone with a heart.

Welcome to DU, NewEnglandGirl!! :hi:
