Well I was 19 living on the UWMadison Campus. I think I was the last virgin on the floor of my dorm. I was working my way through school at the campus Dominoes Pizza, at met a guy named Steve. Steve was on work release after serving a few years for shooting a man in the head during a robbery attempt. I was convinced he was reformed etc etc...Well after a few months he was released and had his own apartment. He has some old girlfriend hrassing him at work and I wanted him to know I "loved" him, so we did the deed. The next day I called over there, and his "old girlfriend" answered the phone. The chicken shit quit his job, and I wouldn't have quit anyway. I have since went on to have more and better sex.

It didn't really affect much. I didn't use it to my advantage like I thought I would if it ever happened. I still turned in papers and she still graded them harshly, as she was wont to do. I did get an 'A' in the class, and in fact I took her again the next semester for American Film. We were still seeing each other, and by then we grew more and more brazen to the point where we were making out in the park right across from the frat houses. Most of the students from the Comp class knew about it. Some were pissed, some were shocked, and some were like, "That's awesome! You said you were gonna hook up with her and you did it!" But by that time it had turned into an actual relationship instead of just a novelty, and we had our own problems, because, on top of everything else, we were both seeing other people when we met. Needless to say, it was a weird time in my life.

I was an exchange student in Berlin, 17 years old. It was odd to me to be out and about on an American holiday in a country where it was just another day.

I was walking through the campus of the Free University there and came across an information table for a gay student group.

I ended up chatting with a 20 year old student named Dieter who was manning the table. Blonde haired, blue-eyed Nordic God. He took me for a beer and we ended going back to his apartment.

Me being Jewish and he being the epitome of a German Aryan portrait of perfection from a regime only gone for 35 years at that point, having sex with him, and not just sex but GAY sex, seemed so forbidden on so many levels...like eating a pork chop or shrimp!

We continued to see each other over the course of the summer. My host family never knew...they thought he was just someone I forged a friendship with while swimming at the Univeristy pool. At the end of the summer I had to leave to go home and complete my senior year in high school.

I had lost my virginity, fell in love for the first time, and then had to leave it all at the end of the summer. The day I crossed that threshold of adulthood was the most important Independence Day I have ever had the occasion to celebrate and I will pleasantly remember it as long as I live.

Footnote: I stayed in contact with Dieter and he and his partner, and me and my partner are good friends. Dieter ended up settling down with a Dutch guy named Klaus. Dieter and Klause are legally married today and living in Amsterdam. Meanwhile, my partner and I cannot legally marry and the right wing faction that is trying to dominate our country would like to prevent us from ever doing so.

Maybe one day I will be able to celebrate an Independence Day when we are truly free and independent to marry.
