my computer is fried
Edited on Fri Jun-13-08 04:15 PM by Ava
My computer was murdered yesterday evening by the lightning. Not only did the lightning take out my computer, but also two tv's and a cable box. I'm hoping that it was only the power part of the computer that is messed up - my tech guy(aka my bro) is coming tomorrow to look at it. Today i headed down to my granny and papa's to visit with them, so i'm using their computer now.

Can't believe my computer was hit. We are always so careful about unplugging things during storms, AND i have a surge protector. This lightning storm just came up all of the sudden and struck. After all the crap i had already gone through yesterday with my site and the host it was just the *perfect* ending to the day. :(

i'm seriously in mourning right now. until the computer is fixed, or if it can't be fixed then until i get a new computer, i may be scarce around here once i go back home.

this really really really sucks.

6. That's why I added the :banghead:
I hope it didn't ruin anything irreplaceable though.

2. Homeowners insurance should cover it.
A neighbor of mine had to put in a claim after lightning struck the transformer right next to his apartment, knocking out power to our whole building and frying his TV and computer. He gathered up his receipts, State Farm cut him a check, and he got new stuff.

5. this is appropriate, on the eve of fathers day...
my dad was always the "unplug during a storm" type. even after i got him all hooked up with these "modern" surge protectors, he would still unplug stuff (after counting the number of seconds between lightening flash and thunder clap. under some threshold he would unplug everything.)

i alway thought "pfffttt..." but never said anything. i loved my dad and just thought he was old.

and then one night at my place ZZZAAAPPP!!! and everything on the surge protectors got fried. i had no insurance, but i remembered the surge protector manufacturer offered this "$xx,xxx insurance on your stuff gets damaged using our product."

so i contacted the surge protector guys. if i could produce every sales receipt of every fried device and the receipt for the surge protector, they would look into it. i don't even balance my checkbook.

so i became my dad and unplugged. dude was right more than wrong.

good luck with insurance, ava...

7. Even unplugging doesn't help sometimes
If you get a good jolt, it will "jump the outlet/surge protector and still hit your device.

8. yeah, i know, but its fathers day (officially) now...
ava said the word my father used to say... "unplug"

i thought that he was stupid at the time. and he was not.

he's been gone ten years now.

i wish i could show him i got at least that one life lesson. i know, i got so many more from him, so many more, he must know. and that one was so small.

but i remember always thinking he was so stupid there.

but he was not. i was.

happy father's day. i love you. dad.
