US OPEN FEVER --- Is here in my home town - Tourist advice and tips
Edited on Sat Jun-14-08 10:06 AM by Gilligan
So - there are a brazillion people in town to see golf royalty up close - Of course San Diego has shit morning weather in June - In fact we have a name for it, June Gloom. And there is May Gray.
Then around noon, sometimes earlier or later, it clears up. While I was in town yesterday, I overheard some of our golf visitors saying "I thought San Diego was know for its great weather! This sucks and I didn't bring a sweater."

I am formally telling all of you who want to visit this tourist mecca, May and June sucks. Unless you are inland. No one comes to this town and stays in El Cajon. http://www.city-data.com/city/El-Cajon-California.html

The best time to visit San Diego is Fall. Starting in September and all the way through early November. Clear morning skies. Evenings can get cold. Bring a sweater or jacket.

Summer is f-ing hot here. We are a desert climate but we have the wonderful Pacific Ocean. The evenings can be cool and so a light weight sweater is good to have. Don't drive if you can take our trolley. It runs through downtown and down to the border. It also will take you inland right past SDSU (My alma mater) to El Cajon. Parking is really terrible in downtown, in fact nearly impossible, so leave the car behind and use that trolley. Downtown is okay and lots of people are drawn there to visit "The Gaslamp." The Gaslamp is a trendy area with lots of restaurants and bars.

If you visit the zoo. It is built in a canyon and so walking up hill is part of it. The bus tour through the zoo is worth the extra cost. There is a restaurant in the zoo that has some of the best food in town, Albert's is built to look like a treehouse and has full table service and a good selection of wine and beer. The wait staff is very nice and they have worked in the place forever. The halibut is so good I take my kids there for lunch as a stand alone trip. We have yearly passes and so visiting the zoo just to have lunch is no big deal.

Seaworld is clean and easy to get to. You will need to drive to get there or take a bus. It is very expensive but if you have kids, it is a must. Bring a change of clothes because you will get wet. Leave the clothes in one of the rental lockers. Wild Arctic is really fun and you will see things up close - Polar bears, walrus and beluga whales. Pets Rule is a fun show that features house pets doing amazing stuff.

Visit La Jolla. It is beautiful and worth a peek. From La Jolla take a drive up the coast on Highway 1 and visit the small beach towns.
