12. 16 for permit, 18 for license. |

Didn't have my own car, so there was no hurry. Was kind of in a catch-22 situation. I couldn't find a job without a car. Couldn't get a car without a job. And my parents couldn't afford the extra insurance of having a teenager with a license in the house unless... you guessed it... I had a job. :P

Weeee!
I used that license to buy beer even 2 years into my military stint.. where.. I got busted because you HAVE to show military ID if they ask.
Good times.

43. 15 for learner's permit....21 for the real thing. |
|
And this is in Texas, where you have to have a car to go anywhere!
Got the learner's permit at 15. Flunked the test at 16 -- couldn't parallel park a land barge. I also realized I was not old enough to pay proper attention to the traffic in Houston. I figured if I got a license before I was ready I would probably get killed on the freeway.
So I went to college and lived in dorms for three years, and then got a license when I moved back home, and had to drive to the local junior college to earn a vocational degree. I could usually find a guy with a car to take me to the laundromat to wash clothes, since dorms never had enough washing machines.

in high school, in a rural area, I just was too busy.
then I started college in a city with adequate public transit.
now I'm kind of a public transit advocate and don't think I'll ever get a license unless I eventually settle in a rural area.
