I received the BEST news tonight re: my financial aid for next year!!! |
|
After I did my FAFSA, I thought I was totally f'd. The being married to someone who make a decent living really cramps your eligibility, apparently, even if they're going to school next year too.
But...It is ALL good. I am set. Those grades paid off bigtime. Wow.
*Happy Dance*

7. Great news, BB! Our kids went to school on grants and loans in Massachusetts. |
|
That was before financial aid became almost impossible to get. My daughter was an advisor and got tuition, room and board in a small Los Angeles school. She did take a loan to go to Brandeis University for her MBA; both she and her doctor husband had to work through almost $60,000 in student loans. She turns 40 this year, and I believe everything is paid off -- finally! My son elected not to go to college, and he is doing well in a managerial position with a large food company.
I have no idea how our grandchildren will get through college.
I'm glad that you got the help you needed.
Cordially,
Radio Lady in Oregon

The day after we paid tuition (all loans, no grants or scholarships or anything - we could have got some assistance from the hospital she works at, but we didn't necessarily want to be tied to them afterwards) for the first quarter of my wife's Masters degree, we got a call from the alumni association (undergraduate degree was from the same school) hitting us up for money:
Alumni: Can we have some money? Me: We just forked over a bunch of money to the school yesterday. Alumni: It's for scholarships! Me: Are we getting any of these scholarships? Alumni: Err.... Me: Bye then.
Yeah, the making a living thing in the calculations really blows, especially when you are not going to be making anywhere near that in the next year, because you are going back to school.

how much of an asshole one has to be to come in to someone's thread of good news and be a total shit about it. Hey, a couple of other DUers have family coming out of serious physical hardships. Why don't you go shit in their threads?

In most any other country, an undergraduate of her caliber would have tuition and probably living expenses paid, usually with a small stipend as well. Getting an education is a responsible thing to do.

i appreciate those that have the distinction of saying "i got mine", all the while declaring that "being married to someone who make a decent living really cramps your eligibility".
i'm sure it does. i'm really sure it does.
its just, i don't know, it just sounds so much like the women at the country club, you know?
how hard life is and all. when your "university" ship finally comes in and all. having to struggle through "being married to someone who make a decent living"...
i do weep for her. i do. i think...

and that funding for higher education in Mass has fuck all to do with anti-poverty work in Colorado.
Further, you're making some pretty unwise assumptions about the OP, attacking her personally, and derailing her thread in some weird effort to blame somebody else's claimed misfortune on her, and that's just ignorant hateful bullshit she's done nothing to deserve.
edit: and leave my politics out of it, or I'll hand you your ass.

29. You made some really stupid assumptions about the OP, who is a friend of mine. |

Not that it's any of your business, but here's the deal: They have an apartment, one car, she goes to school full time and does some tutoring, he has a blue collar job. They're not swimming around in gold like Scrooge McDuck. They're not gaming the system or any stupid shit like that, she needs help to pay with school, like most people of modest means do. Her parents are both severely disabled.
She's going to school to make something of herself (and if you had more than 500 posts here, you'd know that she studies the underlying structural problems in our society that lead to income inequality, so it's kinda ironic to be giving her shit about other people's poverty) which is what people need to do in this society to be able to get by, let alone maybe get ahead.
Further, since the budget for student aid in Mass has absolutely no relation to the budget for housing assistance in Colorado, even if she took your misguided guilt trip to heart and dropped out of school tomorrow, it wouldn't put a single cent in your pal bobolink's pocket. So kindly stop pissing on her thread.

are due purely to their own awesomeness? She's a nice person who knows that she is lucky for the opportunities she has. Doesn't mean she can't celebrate her lucky breaks and hard work.
As for the "decent living" bit, have you done a FAFSA lately? I don't know her financial situation, but I can tell you from our own experience that you don't need to be anywhere near the bathing-in-champagne range to be ineligible for all but market-rate loans. An income that will cover an ok apartment, one car and groceries makes you too rich for most assistance. And those loans have to be paid back. And she said that her husband will be in school too, presumably cutting a bunch into that income.
Again, Congrats bi-baby. I know how stressful all that financial aid process is. I'll be worth it in the end.

|
Edited on Sun Jun-15-08 10:41 AM by LaraMN
No, you don't- nor do I.
Many people make a living that is sufficient to get by, but lack the financial reach to enable themselves to better their lives in the long term. They make just enough to be disqualified from the aid that would enable them to attend school, and not enough to pay for it themselves. If anything catastrophic happens in their lives, they can easily be plunged into the ranks of poverty, as many people in the last eight years have.
Is poverty a serious, profound problem? Of course it is. But let's not sarcastically condemn a good person, who seeks to use her life to do good in the world, for making something good happen for herself and wanting to celebrate as much.

If you think bi_baby is a "country club" type, then you don't know shit. She's worked her ass off, and isn't exactly financially privileged.
I'm sorry Bobbolink's in a bad situation, but that is NO reason to shit all over this thread. You framed that statement as if she's somehow taking something away from bobbolink, and that's a fucked up thing for you to do.
Shame, shame.

The continued rising cost of higher education, consistently above the CPI has always astonished me. I don't understand the cause, which is probably complex.
Financial aid has become so important and there is a real sense of personal relief when gained. Even without the aid I sense you have the drive and ambition to find a way to achieve your goals. Continued success in all you endeavors.
