If you knew when you were going to die (or go deaf, if that seems less morbid) and could hear one last song, what would it be?

They just played "Thunder Road" on Meet the Press because it was Tim Russert's favorite song to end the show with a montage of Russert photos. Which was a weird juxtaposition, plus a friend of mine and I used to joke that the last thing we wanted to hear before we died was our favorite Springsteen songs - and "Thunder Road" is mine.

6. Gonna close my eyes and watch you go --
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44tVAJVmQCM&feature=related

"The One I Love"

Gonna close my eyes
Girl and watch you go
Running through this life darling
Like a field of snow
As the tracer glides
In its graceful arc
Send a little prayer out to ya
'cross the falling dark

Tell the repo man
And the stars above
You're the one I love

Perfect summers night
Not a wind that breathes
Just the bullets whispering gentle
'mongst the new green leaves
There's things I might have said
Only wish I could
Now I'm leaking life faster
Then I'm leaking blood

Tell the repo man
And the stars above
You're the one I love
You're the one I love
The one I love

Don't see Elysium
Don't see no fiery hell
Just the lights up bright baby
In the bay hotel
Next wave coming in
Like an ocean roar
Won't you take my hand darling
On that old dancefloor

We can twist and shout
Do the turtle dove
And you're the one I love
You're the one I love
The one I love

7. Superstars Of Greenwich Meantime by Uncle Jim
Uncle Jim being Alan Bishop of Sun City Girls. The song is a 16 minute drunken rant that is the coolest thing I've ever heard.

"You wouldn't know cool if you were a Charlie Parker horn solo!"

20. Mmmm....Izzy
Friends of ours got turned on to Izzy when they were in Hawaii, and everthing stopped for the day of his funeral. They thought "anyone this loved has to be something special." They were playing his music at a party, and we were surprised, because back then, people here in the East hadn't heard of him yet.

24. Hallelujah--the Rufus Wainwright version, because
the song is just heartbreakingly haunting, Cohen (bless the man) can't sing it well himself, and Jeff Buckley's voice is irritatingly breathy and wispy to me.
