Poll question: Do you own an Ipod, a Zune or any other form of portable mp3 player?
If so, what do you own? Is it something you can't live without (as it is in my case) or something you rarely use? Do you refuse to buy one? If so, why? Just gathering info on the preferences of my fellow DUers. :)

1. I got a relatively inexpensive one from Target and it
suits my needs. If I were a commuter - I would probably invest in a more high-tech one, but since I just listen to music at my desk once in a while, it is just what I need.

20. I've got a few of those, they are fantastic.
They were all cheaper, though. Bought two for $35 at Best Buy on Black Friday, and bought another later on sale--a 4G for $69, I think. Best cheap player on the market, easily. It's easy to use with lots of formats, the controls are simple, the size and design are convenient, and it plays Audible audiobooks.

but if stopped working, I wouldn't cry.

It actually didn't work for a year then magically came back to life a few weeks before I was to leave to Europe. Pretty good timing, Ipod gods.

4. I've got an old Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen xtra.
Edited on Sun Jun-15-08 11:09 AM by leeroysphits
What it lacks in brevity when it comes to the name it more than makes up for in longevity of use and HD space.
I've used it almost daily (about 8 hours on average mon-fri) for almost four years now on the original NIMH battery and I've still got gigs and gigs of room left for new music. I love it TOO much.

56. I'm curious - what do you do with it for 8 hours a day?
If you're going to say listen to music, where do you find that much music you want to listen to that much. I love music and could do 8 hours/day for a few days and then I'd be tired of all my songs/music. What do you do?

58. I use it at work, of course and I'll admit it I've collected my favorite music and
found most of my new music via downloading from Usenet. This has been a past time of mine for years (since 2001 when I first got a cable modem).

I currently have around 40 Gigs of music only around 15 Gigs of which I find interesting enough to keep on the Nomad at any given time. So basically I keep 2 or 3 hundred albums on it and just hit "shuffle" it's like having the best commercial free radio station cater specifically to your taste.

7. Yes, and I love it
My first mp3 player was a Sony Discman about 4-5 years ago. I would fill a CD-R full of stand-up comedy and listen with headphones at my industrial job. I reduced the quality of the performances to one-third normal music quality so I could fit 33 hours on one CD-R.

For Christmas a year and a half ago I got an iPod Nano. Now I use it at my newer job with a cassette adapter in a boombox (no headphones allowed :-( ).

I get "The Thom Hartmann" show, "Countdown with Keith Olbermann", the free snippets of "The Stephanie Miller Show", and "The Rachel Maddow" show from iTunes on a daily basis and listen at work. I also get "Ring of Fire" and "Real Time with Bill Maher" on a weekly basis, and "Seder on Sunday" before he was cancelled.

I'm working my way through Thom Hartmann and Rachel Maddow. I'm up to early October with Hartmann and early December with Maddow right now.

And I have about 12 hours of music on there in case my job requires me to move around a lot and not be close enough to the radio to hear the talk clearly.

It makes a somewhat repetative job almost enjoyable!

8. I have an 80gb Zune and I love it
I upgraded from a 20gb Creative Zen that I bought 4 or 5 years ago. I wanted something with video capabilities so I could use an A/V plug to play the video on my TV. I download quite a few shows off the internet so it's nice not having to watch them on my computer all the time.

I only have about 18 gigs on it right now, counting music, podcasts (I love that the podcasts are in a separate section) and video, so I have a way to go before I fill it

19. I've always carried around music
I've evolved from the time I was 8 or 9 I got a little AM radio which I listened to music. When I was in high school it was a cassette player, and for decades I recorded music from the radio for my entertainment. It was about 15 years ago I finally got a cassette player in my car. Then the spouse gave me a CD player....and my last car has a cassette and CD player. I now have a small MP3 player I use for exercising, yard work and walking and an iPod. I cannot live without music!!!

21. I (and my kids) have 2 Zunes, 3 Sansa Clips, an IPod Shuffle, and a Nokia phone that plays music.
Yeah, I like them all. Barely use the phone for music, though. It seemed like a way to combine phone and music when I went jogging, so I didn't have to carry both. But it's a hassle to keep moving songs from one player to the other.

One Zune is mine, one's my daughter's. We both use them a lot.

The Sansa clips are mine and my other daughter's. We use them mostly for audiobooks, since the Zune won't play Audible books, and it's too much work for me to rip audiobooks from disks to WMA or MP3 files.

The IPod shuffle is the old stick kind, not the new clip. Got it two Christmases ago for the older daughter, but it didn't hold enough, and she claims the battery won't hold a charge anymore. Plus, it was more complicated to use, since it doesn't have menus, and you had to use the software to see what was loaded or change or delete anything. Not a bad player, it just got outdated. It's on a desk, unused. :(

25. It's a relief from mixer tapes.
I have some mixer tapes I've been listening to for over 20 years. Now the serendipity of the shuffle mode has stopped me from tapping to the next song before it starts. Though I'm not plugged in all the time. When I listen too much, I discovered that I don't enjoy the music as much. So I practice a little delayed gratification.

33. Video iPod
I have had ipods from each generation. I use my video ipod every day. I use it to store movies and TV shows I buy from iTunes and I watch them on my TV by a simple hook up. I have the first season of Dexter on the iPod. I have over 2,900 songs and use it as the main form of stereo in and out of the house and for longer car trips.

I have an iPhone and will upgrade to the new iPhone when it is released this summer. I use it exclusively for phone calls even though we have a land line.

But we are tech geeks at our house... I don't know how people get by without an iPod - once I had one, it became necessary and so convenient. :hi:

The video part is useless to me. I didn't think it through. I'm never going to watch video on that little screen. Plus I hear it eats battery, but I haven't actually tried it yet. Anyway, I love having every song I own right there in my pocket (or, more precisely, clipped to my belt or backpack.)

I have no car and use public transportation almost exclusively. With my iPod and a pair of dark sunglasses I look like kind of a rough customer, and I'm almost guaranteed a seat to myself on the crosstown bus. (Yay!)

41. iPod 80Gb Classic Black here
I bought it less than two weeks ago to replace a 20Gb 3G that was too small to hold my entire music and podcast collection, it was given to my iPodless brother who doesn't have nearly as much music as I do.

It comes in handy for the two hour trip to and from my mother's house, at work, and it's great for listening to Randi Rhodes and Mike Malloy podcasts from Nova M Radio.

43. I don't understand the appeal
When I drove, I usually listened to the radio, and if I wanted to listen to something else, I found it rare to be on a trip that would take longer than one cd or tape. As for other places, I don't understand listening to things on headphones in public. It seems really strange to me that people are ok not hearing what's going on around them. Some people have mentioned using them on flights, and I guess maybe I would do that, but it seems like a lot of money to spend just to make a few hours more enjoyable (I fly more than most, I guess, but not a ton - 5 or 10 flights a year maybe).

I can fit my entire library of CDs on my iPod with room to spare (60GB Classic). I even have easy access to the CDs I usually do not listen to that much. It is a convince thing. My CDs are in storage as backups in case I ever need to spend 3-4 days re-ripping.

The other appeal for me are the podcasts. There are many great radio shows that I cannot hear during the day, when they're actually broadcast, that I can listen to on my iPod, whenever I want.

On edit: Oh, yeah, and the audiobooks.

52. I guess I'm just not that particular
I would think that trying to sort through the ipod while driving would be frustrating and dangerous, compared to just popping a cd or tape into the car stereo. My girlfriend used to fiddle with her ipod while driving, and it scared the crap out of me. She would also get mad at me on long car trips, because I wouldn't want to listen to music, so that's piece of evidence #1 for me being out of touch with the ipod love.

62. For me it's all about randomness. I get bored easily.
My mp3 player has somewhere around 3000 tracks on it right now. I can hit "Random" and never know which one of those 3000 songs will play next. You could listen for DAYS and not hear the same song twice and the player is portable so I can do this anywhere I am.

I only put complete albums on it but I haven't actually listened to entire album from start to finish in years because I personally LOVE listening to my music at random this way and it can only be done with an mp3 device.

54. I love my iPod and use it constantly, but
I think that's because CMW got me a JBL "onstage" loudspeaker/docking station for it. I don't think I'd use it nearly as much if I had to use headphones/ear buds. :hi:

55. Currently have a Zen Vision: M... hubby ordered me an Archos 605
I have LOVED my Zen for the last two years, but I realized that I really was using it more for videos than listening to music, although I do listen to lots of audio books. My hubby ordered me an Archos 605... it has 160gb memory, plays video, music, stores pictures... has WiFi so I can surf the internet....and he also ordered the DVR docking station, so all I have to do is hook it up to the TV and I can use it as a DVR or more importantly, I can just transfer some of my gazillion movie files straight to the Archos and play it back on the TV.... this thing rocks, and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

68. 80G Video iPod that I ADORE! I resisted getting one for years, now I won't leave the
house without it. I have music, movies, npr podcasts, audiobooks, language lessons, walking tours. It's fantastic.

69. Nope. Too much compression of the frequency range.
I'll stick with my vinyls and CDs, thank you.

It takes a lot out of the music. Of course a lot of you probably don't listen to music that has any dynamic range or a frequency range.
