3. Boott Spur provides what might be the best views going up the mountian
and seeing the remaining snow and ice fields while hiking in hot humid air only added to the sublime affect.

5. Thanks for posting! It looks like a great time.
I picked up some new hiking shoes/boots yesterday for summer hikes. Nothing that spectacular in FL, though. :-)

8. Thx and I'm sure there's plenty of natural beauty there in FL
and all the better when you can share it no matter what the land is like.

12. Nice
How long was the hike up? My husband has been wanting to do that since we moved to ME, but we haven't gotten around to it. He was going to meet up with a buddy back in NY, but that didn't happen. Our little boys love to hike, but I don't know if they could do that yet.

at least up Tuckerman's Ravine which was closed when we went this weekend but will be open in a few weeks I'm sure.

Here's my son's trip report with all the details:

James' Mt Washington Trip Report:

Date: 14 June 2008
Trails: Tuckerman's Ravine Trail, Boott Spur Trail (5.4 mi) , Davis and Crawford Paths, Lion's Head trail (4.1 mi)

Total Distance: 9.5 mi

Weather: Clear and warm in the valley, warm and humid, in the 60s at the Summit, Hazy but with some good views still possible

Start Time; 0715
Arrived on Summit: 1145
Arrived back at Joe Dodge Lodge: 1625

We started up the mountain from Joe Dodge Lodge at 7:15 in the morning. We started off the Tuckerman Ravine Trail, then cut off onto the Boott Spur Trail. Originally, we would have come up Tuckerman's Ravine, but it was closed due to snow and ice on the trail. The trail was steep and rocky at first, but it started to get easier once we came to the Boreal Zone. The trail jumps up several times to bare spots with great views of the mountain. One particular spot came up to a small flat area. Boy what a view! There were no trees, so you could see all around you. As we came to the Alpine Zone, the trail got increasingly steeper and rockier. What with the big black spiders, black ravens, and bare terrain, it looked like a scene from a horror movie. The trail led us up and over 3 big, steep bumps, then leveled off. We finally came to Davis Path. The trail was flat for a little less than a half a mile. We had already hiked about 4.5 miles. At the summit cone, we merged onto Crawford Path. This was a very steep climb. We stayed at the summit for a while, then headed down Lion's Head Trail. Lion's Head is a very steep trail with lots of rocks. It is about a mile shorter than the Boott Spur Trail at about 4.1 miles. At the end, we switched onto Tuckerman's Ravine Trail, and headed back "home". We arrived at Joe Dodge at 4:25 in the afternoon. This is one hike I'll never forget!

On Edit: Lions Head might not be a good trail to go down if the kids are very small.

17. I love his trip report!
The twins are four and my oldest is five. They have A LOT of energy. We go hiking a lot in the spring, summer, fall when I can get out, though not as much this year with the gas prices and my oldest in school still. I've been trying not to drive as much. My husband climbs, but hasn't been climbing since we moved up here. We used to live near New Paltz in NY so we had the Gunks at our disposal and the Catskills. He had just gotten into ice climbing before we moved to Maine. I guess we got a little spoiled. Having three kids has slowed us down a little. More working, less play. We are about to move up to Camden. We haven't even been to Acadia or Baxter yet, so I'm not sure what is around there, but I know that he has really wanted to do the Mt. Washington/Presidential Range thing. Your son looks a bit older than our kids.

18. He's twelve
I wouldn't hesitate about bringing them up Tuckerman's...maybe even Boott Spur if they can deal with a very longer day.

14. And a nice clear day
Every time I've been up Mt. Washington, it's been socked in with fog, though it's been beautiful below. Looks like a gret time. Happy Father's Day! :hi:

15. A rae day indeed
it was actually Hot and Humid up there, I've never been up there and felt hot in shorts and one thin shirt before.

The sky was hazy so the long distance views were not as good as these pix might imply but still impressive.
