Michael Nesmith's "Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash," the best album John Hartford never made
Hartford did it first, but Nesmith took careful note and two years later used "Aereo-Plain"...and Hartford in general...as a template for what might be his strongest album.

The "Cosmic Papa Nes" version of "Uncle Pen" (part of a suite with "The Back Porch And A Fruit Jar Full Of Iced Tea" and "The F.F.V.") is PURE John Hartford, with trademark Nesmith inflections:

"Late in the evening at about sundown, high on the hill up A-bove the town, Uncle Pen played the fiddle, Lordy how it would ring, you could hear it talk, you could hear it sing..."

Original Release Date: January 1, 1973

Original Release Date: 1971

1. ~

I saw Hartford twice at very small venue, about 100 people.

2. His version of "Gentle On My Mind" from the "All In The Name Of Love" album...
...also available on "Me Oh My, How The Time Does Fly: The John Hartford Anthology," is AMAZING.

One reviewer said that it was because Hartford made his own performance secondary to the legendary session cats on the track...Sam Bush, Buddy Emmons, Jim Colvard, Hargus "Pig" Robbins, David Briggs, Roy Husky Jr., Henry Strzelecki, Kenny Malone, Larrie London.

All I can say is that anyone who hasn;t heard this particular version has never heard the song.
