So if you always wondered why I'm such an anal retentive nutjob this is why....

So I wanted to call my mother yesterday. First to wish my stepdad 'Happy Fathers Day' plus to tell her about the days events. For those who didn't see my post over in GD, it was the annual St. Anthony Parade in my hometown - one of those catholic processions with all the marching bands playing oldschool Italian dirges while the all the Saints are carted along the parade route.

Of course a part of the parade anytime ESPECIALLY during election year are the candidates and they were all out there working the vote. But even if he's not up for election, Joe Biden is a part of this parade every year. He's Catholic and he's a big part of the festivities.

So after being disturbed from my housecleaning with all the noise, I step out to my porch to watch the parade. When Joe walked by I waved to him and he came up on my porch and chatted with me (I told him he should have stuck with the race and that I voted for him). Pictures were taken, hugs were exchanged and Joe was on his way. My stepfather is a big Joe Biden fan so I wanted to tell him about it cause he'd get a kick out of it. So telling my mother THIS is the conversation I get:

MOM: "So Lynne, did you pull all the weeds in front of your house before the parade?"

ME: "Mom, I don't think Joe Biden noticed if there were any weeds growing on my sidewalk but yeah, I had pulled them just a few day ago"

MOM: "Well you know, you gotta keep that house up, those weeds grow quickly. You don't want Joe Biden seeing your house looking all disarray. Was the porch swept off?"

ME: "Mom, I had no clue that there was a parade OR that Biden would be on my porch but I swept a few days ago"

MOM: "You need to sweep that everyday, don't want your neighbors to think you're messy"

well that was pretty much the conversation. THis is what I lived with for 40 years. I love my mom but geez, the porch was swept and the weeds pulled - get off my back!

And no, the first thing Joe did when he saw my porch was to sweep it and pull the weeds. And to think you people didn't support him for president.

3. Your mother has weird priorities.
What if you had fallen off the porch, fractured your ribs and several limb bones, and had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance. The FIRST question mothers should always ask is "Were you wearing clean underwear?"

4. Funny you mention that
When I was a kid I had this giant size beer mug (like a 48oz one) that I would keep all my makeup in it. (I was 15 - I won the thing at a carnival). One day I accidently dropped the mug - it slipped out of my hands, hit my knee, shattered and sliced it open and then fell to the ground.

My mother's first comment - "Did you get blood on the carpet". Mind you I had to go to the doctors and get 5 stitches but she was more concerned about blood on the damn carpeting.

5. A good way to get rid of weeds is vinegar and soapsuds
mix them together and then poor it on the weeds. The soapsuds (from dishwashing liquid) makes it hold to the weeds and then the vinegar dries them out.

This is the alternative to using Round-Up which is nasty stuff made by bad people (Monsanto).

18. You met my alltime favorite senator!!!!!
God - but I love that guy.

But I digress....

I wanna know why moms feel that they have the God-given right to constantly nag and criticize their children until the day they die.

Lynne....you and I are pretty much the same age (I'm 39). My mom is 58 - and no matter how many times I've told her how much her criticism takes me right over the edge, she would say I'm being ridiculous. ~~sigh~~

Maybe you should have told her to get off your lawn. :P

22. I wonder if it is an immigrant "thing" - my mother worries about
Edited on Mon Jun-16-08 01:49 PM by hedgehog
keeping things clean that never even occur to me. Not as bad as you describe, but still. On the other hand, I've had to choose between keeping a perfect house and doing other things. I suffer house keeping guilt.

On edit: my grandmother worked as a house maid when she first came to this country. Are we all trying to keep to a standard set by people with several full time maids and a groundskeeper?

24. I was thinking of immigrants becasue the really serious housekeepers
in my old neighborhood were all Polish. I'm talking about people who keep plastic covers on the couch and have plastic runners over the living room rug. Of course, those had to be dusted because everyone always sat in the kitchen!

28. Reminds me of my Dad and parking.
No matter what news I have, it's always ultimately about the parking. "Hey dad, I have a new girlfriend". "Where does she live?, can you park there?". "Hey Dad, I just got a new job". "Do you get a parking space". I think if I won the Nobel peace prize all he would be interested in is where I would park at the ceremony!

When I was shopping for a house it was always "DOes it have a place to park your car". I made sure she fell in love with the house I bought before I told her about the street parking.

See, I actually get to hang out on my porch with Sen. Biden. Clearly your senators don't give a fuck about you ESPECIALLY since you seem to want to destroy the environment with your constant use of Air Conditioning.

Actually, Tim Kaine spoke at a graduation ceremony I attended on Friday. His son was graduating. He did a nice job. It was very sweet.
