I don't get all the DU Golf Love all of a sudden
There've even been golf threads in GD in the last couple days.

7. Because Tiger is awesome. Not that those guys aren't good, but
I really think Tiger is in his own catergory.

10. Even when people (like me) aren't golfers or big fans, we appreciate the best in the world, doing
their thing.

3. I was rooting for Rocco.
He seems like a pretty cool guy and I always root for the underdog. I must admit though, Tiger is an awesome golfer!

20. Me, too. TIger's had plenty of glory, I was hoping Rocco could have his moment in the sun
And I'm not even a golf fan.

9. The Stanley Cup threads had fans of both the Pens and Dead Things
The NBA finals threads had fans of both the Lakers and Salt Licks.

Stupor Bowl threads have fans of both teams involved, as well as of the commercials and just all the hyperfaloo that goes with a Stupor Bowl.

Jankees threads have Jankees fans and people with good taste.

But everything about golf is about Tiger Woods, and I just don't get that.

He deserves his recognition.

And he handles pressure like no one I have seen.

14. Recognition is one thing
This is more like adoration.

There've been plenty of golfers who dominated their sport — Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson... hell, back to Sam Snead and even Bobby Jones. None have been deified like Woods.

Seems to me it's an extension of the Michael Jordan phenomenon: The media cream their jeans over someone and the people follow suit, especially those who weren't really fans before.

When I was a sports editor, I had this kid intern who didn't know shit about sports but wanted to be a sportswriter to get back at the jocks who pissed him off in high school. One night, when Mark McGwire was chasing Ruth's season record of 60 homers, he came trotting into the newsroom and said, excitedly, "Did Big Mac hit one??"

He'd never expressed any interest whatsoever in baseball before that, nor did he afterward. I see a lot of that with Tiger Woods fans.

17. But with Tiger, I think he has done much more than those great golfers
The Tiger bandwagon started a good while ago.

Now I'm curious. I know some names, but not records, except I know the lowest round ever was a 59.

(These are all PGA Tour records.)

Lowest 72-hole scores

• 254 - Tommy Armour III (64-62-63-65), 2003 Valero Texas Open
• 256 - Mark Calcavecchia (65-60-64-67), 2001 Phoenix Open
• 257 - Mike Souchak (60-68-64-65), 1955 Texas Open; Tiger Woods (64-63-64-66), 2007 Tour Championship
• 258 - Donnie Hammond (65-64-65-64), 1989 Texas Open; John Cook (64-62-63-69), 1996 FedEx St. Jude Classic; Steve Jones (62-64-65-67), 1997 Phoenix Open

Furthest under par for 72 holes

31-under:
• Ernie Els, 2003 Mercedes Championship, 261 total, par-73

29-under:
• Joe Durant*, 2001 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, 259, par-72
• Tim Herron*, 2003 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, 259, par-72

• Stuart Appleby*, 2003 Las Vegas Invitational, 259
• Phil Mickelson, 2006 BellSouth Classic, 260, par-72

*First four rounds of 5-round tournament

Lowest 18-hole score

The record for the lowest 18-hole score on the PGA Tour is 59. This score has been posted three times in tour history:

• Al Geiberger: 1977 Memphis Classic (29-30), Colonial Country Club (par 72)
• Chip Beck: 1991 Las Vegas Invitational (30-29), Sunrise Golf Club (par 72)
• David Duval: 1999 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic (31-28), PGA West (Palmer Course) (par 72)

Edit: Just for the record, my best round was a 46-42 — 88 at Salinas Fairways (par 72). :)

Career wins

• Sam Snead - 82
• Jack Nicklaus - 73
• Ben Hogan - 64
• Tiger Woods - 64
• Arnold Palmer - 62

Most wins in a year

18 —

He is truly amazing. I guess folks just like to watch him play. My brother was watching him on Saturday when he was here.

13. Every one wants to watch greatness....
Look at how much interest a dying sport like horse reacing gets when a TC is a possibility.
Tiger transcends the sport.
