You don't have to give me the address - just the city and state.

7. Sure!
DFH Palo Santo is a nice, strong, dark ale aged with palo santo wood. You can really taste the tanins in this one, its smooth and you can't even taste the 13%ABV

DFH 90-min IPA is an excellent IPA full of the right balance of hops to malts

Southern Tier Unearthly and Gemini are both really good ales that have a nectar like quality to them. Technically their IPA's, but they are so much more

Jah Va is a Stout with LOTS OF COFFEE!!! Expect to stay up and party an hour or two longer after dusting off one of these

Cheers!

Also, we tend to get pretty fuzzy on geography once you get far away from the Pacific.

49. I took Greyhound from Sac to Chicago and back twice.
By my estimation, there are approximately 100 people along I-80 east of Reno and west of Chicago, and they all either work at gas stations, diners and truck stops or plant corn. Except in Nevada, where they also run seedy middle-of-nowhere casinos.

14. Hmmm...now that ones tough, but not impossible
If you check around, you can get access to some great Rocky Mountain beers - and I'm not talking Coors!

Great Divide is really good, and they make a great Oak Aged Stout, as well as a great IPA (Titan) and a great Double IPA (Hercules)

Oskar Blues also makes some great brews: Ten Fidy, Old Chub, Dale's Pale Ale and Gordon Beer are all excellent.

Grab a growler of Alpine Duet IPA, or some bombers of Alpine's Pure Hoppiness.

Try out whatever the Port Brewing companies are doing, or head to the wharf and grab a growler of Ballast Point Sculpin IPA.

El Dorado is host to "Poor Red's", home of the best Gold Cadillac in the state. It's quite an interesting bar on a Friday or Saturday night, but only if you don't mind sharing the place with as many other people as can squish in. :)

I just found somebody's photo journal of their motorcycle ride through the Gold Country, and they end up at Poor Reds. Great bunch of pictures of the local California foothills - gold rush country. http://www.digmycity.com/forum/f97/ride-thru-gold-country-auburn-coloma-9723.html

109. Thanks

I'll be on the lookout for the Sprocket Ale next time I'm in Hangtown.

Good to hear that you're keeping with a more mainstream basement remodel. :)

102. There's a brewpub/restaurant near you.
I think it's called "Hops", and it's down the road from the Fairfield Commons mall on Veteran's Memorial Pkwy. The beers are really good and the food is above average. You can even take home a refillable gallon jug if you like the stuff. The refills are cheap too.

I'm going to be back in the area next week, so I might even talk my wife into stopping there after a bike ride.

Home of The Brown Elton (which is actually pink and always has been), one of the few places in America where we can actually prove that George Washington slept. Because GW slept a lot. In fact, if Washington slept everywhere he is reputed to have slept, it's amazing that we won the war.

Crazy narcoleptic bastard. :hide:

As any CT 5th grader can tell you, Washington was also a piss-poor spy...captured twice by the French during the French and Indian War. The only reason he wasn't executed was because he was so bad at being a spy that he never obtained any information and they couldn't actually make the argument that he was a spy as opposed to a guy pretending to be a spy...and he had a lot of money to buy his freedom. Thankfully, he was a better commander of guerrilla forces, saboteur and from the British POV, a terrorist. Washington played dirty and he played hard; the Brits had never seen anything like it.

Many of the hills, canyons and brooks near my house have stories and names attached to them as a result. He liked to hide troops in forested high-ground on both sides of roads...then wait for British regiments to pass in the middle, opening fire down on them, annihilating entire units while taking no casualties. Another favorite trick was to sabotage bridges by removing nails so that (British) horse-backed couriers (because the revs used foot-couriers) would be thrown to their deaths in the stony brooks this part of the New England is legendary for when the horses snapped their ankles. The British had a name for these sorts of tactics...cheating.

You might be wondering what this all has to do with micro-brewed beer. The Brown Elton was a tavern and inn. It houses one of the few remaining (but non-functional) breweries of that time. Tours are available by appointment. No drinking allowed on the premises. (I just find that ironic.)

This concludes this episode of Chan790's Sardonic Real History of Western North-Central CT
