ever post a joke that someone takes seriously?
Not in the lounge, of course, but on other areas of the site? I responded to one of the "indigenous" polls with a smartass quip about us all being indigenous to Africa, and someone responded with a lengthy discussion of human migration. Yes, I am aware of human migration patterns actually, and get the point, but....

yeah.

Is it wrong that I have a sense of humor about things? Is it wrong that some people don't seem to? Anyone else experience this phenomenon?

I have posted a serious topic that got silly responses, but... I usually appreciate those too.

4. Sometimes it's difficult to guess what is intended seriously and what is a joke or...

perhaps an expression of loyalty to a weird ideology.

For example, you could browse through this thread and try to classify every post. At least a few will be difficult for you to classify as a joke or serious.

5. I'm afraid in our limited areas of expertise
we tend to correct any post that isn't "informed". Wishing to be taken seriously tends to stifle our inner child.

Oh, wait...is this thread a joke?

6. Normally, I just have the problem of being misunderstood...
...whether I'm Sirius or not.

As for the indigenous quip, it reminds me that I've always wanted to make a parody of the "Native Texan" bumpersticker to "Native Terran" ;)
(I figure a few of my fellow native Texans would misinterpret even that!) :P

15. lol
:D

I was thinking more along the lines of them seeing "terror" instead ;)

I used to have a sticker from the experimental rock group negativland that said simply in black letters on bright yellow "car bomb". If you know the band, you know what it's referring to :P

12. Yes - and hard as it is to believe, I think people (even in the Lounge),
are becoming even less capable of identifying the non-serious. (The serious-takers defend themselves by saying that there is so much abject stupidity around that it's hard to tell the difference, but that excuse only goes so far...)

13. Yep, it works the other way around.
I got an email that was critical, I thought, of a piece of music written by my partner.

Apparently this guy was sarcastic and I didn't get the sarcasm.
So he got mad at me for defending my sweetie's music & not getting the sarcasm. :wtf: He was pissed that I got involved.

Since when am I not supposed to believe in and defend my partner's artistic creations??? :wtf:

I'm not being phony. I really do think his stuff is good and the e-mail did not communicate the guy's intentions.

People have gotten mad at me for defending his actions. I don't get it.

16. It's hard to convey the timing and tones normally in a joke via straight text.
That, and some people just take things too seriously. :P
