Barbary Castle crop circle 'a coded image representing the first 10 digits, 3.141592654, of pi'
Most complex crop circle ever discovered in British fields
By Richard Savill
17/06/2008
The most complex, "mind-boggling" crop circle ever to be seen in Britain has been discovered in a barley field in Wiltshire.

The formation, measuring 150ft in diameter, is apparently a coded image representing the first 10 digits, 3.141592654, of pi.

It is has appeared in a field near Barbury Castle, an iron-age hill fort above Wroughton, Wilts, and has been described by astrophysicists as "mind-boggling".

Michael Reed, an astrophysicist, said: "The tenth digit has even been correctly rounded up. The little dot near the centre is the decimal point.

"The code is based on 10 angular segments with the radial jumps being the indicator of each segment.

1. I think ALL circles are coded representations of pi!

4. So know we know the aliens use a base-10 numbering system
Neat. Now if they can just stop making the crop circles and maybe draw out plans for a nuclear fusion plant...

...How about that cure for cancer, a warp drive, or even that recipe for neocon souffle?"

6. Easy as pi: Astrophysicist solves riddle of Britain's most complex crop circle

SNIP:
Firstly, the diagram is divided into ten equal sections (a bit like a dartboard, or a cake sliced ten ways) because there are ten staggered edges located at strategic points around the crop circle.

------------

Beginning in the centre with the arrow marked 'Start', the first number, three, is represented by three red blocks from clockwise.
Follow this round and this takes you to the decimal point, which is depicted by a small circle in the barley.

The number after the decimal point is one, represented by one green block.

The same pattern continues for each of the numbers - four purple blocks, one orange, five blue, nine yellow, two purple, six red, five green, then four dark blue, followed by three circles, or dots, acknowledging that Pi is infinite

14. Wouldn't the aliens do better to just land at CNN and hand someone a diagram?
I mean, what's the logic here? "As an alien, I want everyone on Earth to know I exist, but I'm terrified they'll know I exist, so I will make this giant circle in their food crops (not sand, dirt, rock, asphalt, a football field...) so they can work it out, know I exist, and... Something. I forgot."

Or are the crop circles their version of the daily Sudoku in the morning paper? We're being contacted by a junior gaming editor for the Polaris Gamma Tribune?

17. We won't have those here since all the fields are flooded.
I bet those aliens are pretty upset. England, England, always England. No fair! Actually there was one in Solano County, CA about 3 or 4 years ago.
