Could you see these on a wall in your home?
Most here know by now of my penchant for fractal art, and IMO I'm fairly artistic at my chosen hobby. I want to take it to the next level now, and am having some more of my works printed so they may be framed and displayed (I've already had a different one printed, and it came out great!). I'm contemplating starting a web site, and I already have a cool name picked out for my business.

So... enuf background, and on to the important stuff- could you see these on display, either in your home or in a public place? I hope the answer is "yes"...

Fractal Storm

Sunrise On The Lake

I have a couple other choices picked out, but wish to see your reaction to these first.

1. I like "Sunrise On The Lake."

But I would probably call it "Moonrise On The Lake," because of the colors.

Anyway, it is very soothing. I would like to see it in an office waiting room, like in a hospital or clinic where soothing images are helpful.

4. I really do like #1, but I'm going to give you some hard-headed advice from
a professional:

1) The proof is in the printing. If your creation doesn't print cleanly, you won't be able to sell prints of it.

2) I've only followed the "fractal art" movement peripherally, but the essential question that will decide the saleability of your art is this: "Has anyone else done anything that looks like this?"

I consider you a friend, so I'm not happy to have to tell you that I've seen quite a bit of fractal pieces that have a "nautilus shell" as their defining visual element. That may well affect the commercial possibilities f an illustration like yours...

But, hey, don't let my comments make you give up. As I said, I really like #1, and you did ask for honest opinions. And my honest opinion is that you have real potential. Keep working at it.

6. I'm well aware of your points, and I actually agree.
Spiral fractals are way WAY WAY overdone, which is why you'll only see the occasional one posted by me- I've moved on to the stage in which the fractal is transformed into original art by various means. I'm more centered on the play of colors and the composition of the work than anything else, but I'll make use of whatever I come across that looks good.

As for the printing, I render my art as high resolution TIF files (8000 x 6000 x 2400 dpi) , and they will be printed on a $65,000 Agfa printer and mounted upon plastic signage stock. They'll print cleanly up to poster-sized and larger- me and my print expert have discussed wall-sized murals. Talk about your psychedelic playroom...

8. Which Agfa printer? A Crystal Raster? If so, that'll be DAMN nice. And hey,

8000 x 600 x 2400 PPI works out to A HUNDRED AND THIRTY-SEVEN GODDAMN MEGS OF FILE SIZE, and that's in 8-bit RGB!

Good GOD almighty! You must have RAM out the ears of your computer, or render that stuff overnight.

I'd be interested in hearing how you handle files that size.

(Actually, I work with Photoshop files that size all the time, but from what I understand, rendering software uses much more horsepower than Photoshop does.)

15. I'm not certain of the exact model
...even tho' I helped set it up, it was a while back, and I can't bring it to mind at the moment.

My graphics rendering box ain't really anything special in this day and age- 3gb of DDR2 memory sure helps, and the x64 mobo and chip also speed things up. A lot depends upon how complex the fractal is- at that size it can take anywhere from ten minutes to six hours to complete. And in most GOOD fractal generators you can go into the preferences and designate how much horsepower to assign the rendering engine.

Just a little off on your calcs, but not by much- the original Photoshop .psd files at that resolution come in at 116,646,100 mb, and the uncompressed .tif file stays fairly close to that. The only hardship is, I have to edit the graphics while zoomed in to about five percent (to view the entire fractal). It's something one gets used to, I guess. My screen resolution is set at 1600, which helps somewhat, along with the 22" flat screen monitor.

16. A small edit due to the time limit expiry
I meant to say my screen resolution is set at 1600x1200, and I guess to see the entire graphic you'd have to zoom OUT, not in.

Also, in the sign printing program my guy uses (FlexiSign Pro) the printer driver is designated as an Agfa Grand Sherpa Universal 64, although that is in fact not the actual printer model- the drivers appear to cover a range of printers. Not unusual.

7. My dear Prisoner_Number_Six!
Wow!

I especially like "Sunrise on the Lake."

Graceful, beautiful, stunning...

The way the line vanishes into the distance...

Gorgeous!

The first one is also beautiful, but it lacks the power of simplicity that I love in the second one...

You should definitely be marketing these!

:woohoo:

10. I want one
You might want to watermark the one's you've got up or there gonna get stolen.

Not like I'd do anything like that.

12. They are watermarked
Lower corner, you can see my "SAH" signature (partially obscured in one of them by the frame, but still there). In any case, I've only posted the low rez jpeg files, and have no objection to them being displayed by others if they wish. They're certainly not going to be able to print them cleanly at that size, and I'm not of the school of thought that one's art should be hoarded and hidden.

but I like that style in general and wouldn't say no to hanging something like that.

14. Fractal art has been way overdone.
You would have to use fractals in a less conspicuous way than your first image. I LOVE the second image; it is not "fractally" (fractish?) at all. g.
