Can anyone recommend a cheap but relatively safe hotel/motel in Philadelphia?
I'm trying to talk my parents into letting me go there by myself some time this summer.

1. Where do you want to be? Near the historic stuff, near the center of
the city, or neither?

12. Hmm.
Well, south, south you could stay down by the airport - it would be cheap and safe, but you'd have to drive into the city.

If you mean South Philly, like the area around the Italian Market (which isn't really South Philly, but it's where tourists think of when they think of South Philly. The real South Philly isn't very nice), you won't find any big hotels - it's a mostly residential area - but I did hear about a nice bed and breakfast down there called The Shippenway Inn...damn, I just looked it up and they closed. Heh.

It would be easier to find a decent, decently priced hotel in Center City.

15. That's easier.
The convention center area is right next to Chinatown. There's a Hampton Inn there, a bunch of other chains.

17. There's a Travel lodge right near there as well. Really cheap,
but strange. No Windows. All the windows look out into the lobby.

You might be able to get a good deal on hotwire.

3. That's a big diverse area, first figure out where you want to be,
Once you have the neighborhood in mind, try Hotwire. How old are you? Do you have a credit card?

5. Our layover hotel used to be the Sheraton in the Society Hill area
I really liked that part of town, and felt safe there. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the rates are like there.

6. It's pretty pricey. The OP needs to specify what part of the city they want.
And then I can help. I live here.

7. Right outside of Philly- the Bates motel is fairly reasonable.

Seriously though, most national chain hotels are safe & inexpensive. Go to one of the travel shopping sites and check prices. I would AVOID the following chains; Knights inn, Motel 8, or anything else that is less than 40 dollars a night. Trust me. It isn't only about personal safety but also the "ick" factor. I remember having to sleep in my clothes on top of the blanket at a knights inn. Those sheets had NOT been washed between rentals.

9. How old are you?
Reason I ask is some hotels won't allow anyone under 21 to check in without an adult.

I would definitely look into that before going.

11. 17 but I'll be 18 by the time I go.
21? Really? I thought 18 would be fine anywhere.

13. I know. It was a surprise to me as well.
I only find this out this week when TM went to Beach Week. One of the friends decided to rent a hotel room because there was no room at the house they were renting, (he'd only recently decided to go). Some adults went down to be there 'just in case' and one of them had to rent the room.

Things you never think of.

16. Relatively safe as compared to what?
Because relatively safe in Philly is not the same as relatively safe anywhere else.
