When I was a teenager, cars would've been backed up on South Main for four or five blocks on a night like this.

This pic was made 19 years before that, but it's the same street (though Mel's was gone by that time) and part of the same timeless rite of passage.

I've often heard of his love for drag racing. I also seem to remember reading that he used to buy junker cars, restore them to barely-running condition, and then crash them into quarry walls. Not sure if that's true or apocryphal.
