The highest rated show ever to be canceled was "Bridget Loves Bernie". It ranked 5th in the ratings of all shows for the one season it aired (1972-1973).
The theme, a marriage between a rich Irish Catholic teacher (Meredith Baxter) and a Jewish cab-driver (David Bernie) offended so many viewers, and caused so much hate mail, the successful show was taken off the air.
Today is Meredith Baxter's 61st birthday. Happy Birthday, Meredith!

2. That theme is so....innocuous today. |

And perhaps we'll be getting to the point where a gay or lesbian couple on a network show, their lives honestly portrayed (unlike a cartoon, such as, oh, "Will and Grace", for example) will not engender any protests or controversy.
Sorry...my personal opinions again.
Happy Birthday, Meredith Baxter!

3. Then today would also be Michael Gross's 61st birthday. |

Both of the Keatons have the exact same birthday!
And David Birney was Meredith Baxter's husband, back when she was Meredith Baxter Berney.
Strange world.
