Okay. I'm tired of what's on TV. Bring back the black and white game shows! |
|
I want to see Beat The Clock, I've Got A Secret, To Tell The Truth, Name's The Same, What's My Line, the original The Price Is Right, and as many others as I can think of.
GSN needs to go back to being Game Show Network, and they should show Sunday Night In Black and White. And add a Saturday Night In Black and White.
Signed, Grumpy Old Lady

1. Know what I loved about 'What's My Line?' |
|
That the entire panel were in evening wear. I always thought that was seriously classy. :)

2. They were a genteel bunch. |
|
I liked that they used formal address, quaint though it may seem now. I guess it's the quaintness I liked.

3. Now, it'd have to be 'Ms. Kilgallen' |
|
The show seemed very "uptown" to me, very "Great White Way."
I bet they all went to '21' afterward. :)

4. It's my understanding that the rest of the cast didn't care much for Dorothy Kilgallen. |
|
But I can so imagine them at 21, the women in the furs and the men with a Manhattan in hand (what else?).

5. She was a theatre columnist, no? |
|
I was thinking Betsy Palmer was the other female panelist, but it was Arlene Francis. Palmer was on "I've Got a Secret."
Don't have any idea where Palmer came from. The only other thing I've ever seen her in was "Mister Roberts." But that was part of the allure, too — the panel weren't just "celebrities," they were New Yorkers. In a way, they were New York.
I guess when I was a kid, New York — with the Yankees and Mickey Mantle and seven million people and the tallest buildings and all that — was kind of bigger than life. To an extent, I guess it still seems that way.

8. Betsy Palmer later played Mrs. Voorhees in Friday The 13th. |
|
:D
Yes, Dorothy was a theater columnist. She was famously (intensely) disliked by Frank Sinatra. Her politics also got in the way of a more friendly relationship with her fellow WML panelists. Hers is a pretty interesting story, and there are some who believe her death was not accidental.

6. Like "Jeopardy!" with Art Flemming? |
|
No video screens, just a dude pulling a card from a slot to reveal the answer.
Ah, those were the days!

7. What's My Line and I've Got a Secret air every night on |
|
GSN - midnight to 1 AM on the west coast, probably an ungodly hour on the east coast. I love watching the old shows. They take me back to a time when people were polite to each other, and game show panelists dressed to the nines.
The Mystery Guests are really interesting. The other night a very young Debbie Reynolds was on. Also saw Doris Day recently. It's like watching a time capsule.

9. I know, and I DVR both shows every night. |
|
It's not quite the same, though. Those are the only two BW shows they air anymore, and they've been relegated to the middle of the night instead of being shown in prime time like the Sunday Night in BW block once was.

13. I only started to get GSN about a year ago so it's all |
|
relatively "new" to me.
I was on a game show called Split Second back in 1973. There was no way to tape it back then, so all I have is an old reel-to-reel audio recording. What I wouldn't give to have that show rerun, so at long last I could make a copy. Chances are it was erased though. Most of those old shows probably were never saved at all.

11. What's my line is one of my favorite shows |
|
I still need to watch the dvr of it from last night. I like "I've got a secret" too, but it's not as fun to watch as What's My Line.

15. I really don't remember the old game shows very well. |
|
I did enjoy watching them on cable.
I did like watching To Tell The Truth.
We can't watch on my cable anymore without paying extra.
