2. I think females of the orange tabby kind are very rare. Don't know if this applies to longhaired |

cats too. Very sweet pic.

3. They're not terribly rare |
|
I have an orange female much like the one in the pic. But in order get an orange female, both parents must be orange.

6. not true - my calico female |
|
had two orange tabby girls - one short haired, one long haired. And a long-haired silver tabby.
I don't know who the dad was - Novi (the mom) was a stray we'd been feeding and she brought us her kittens (all of whom we kept). I was sure there were two boys, until their first check up and the vet said otherwise...
There are no orange tabby male strays around here, though - I've taken care of almost every feral in the area, and there have been many silver tabby males, a few tuxes, and some black cats, but no orange toms.

9. The feral who gave birth to my two little orange kittens is a tortie. |
|
There are a couple of orange toms in the neighborhood.

10. That's because she's a tortie. |
|
My calico gave birth to a few female orange tabbies. Fur coloring is on the X chromosomes for cats-that's why male calicos are always rare and sterile-their genotype is X(black)X(orange)y. They're carrying an extra X chromosome; they're a genetic mutant. So, in order for a girl kitty to be orange, she must have at least one orange X, and no other color with it. Basically, the tortie mom is X(orange)X(black) and the father could be X(orange)y or X(white)y. I've seen that, and the kitten had calico patterning, only it was orange tabby and white instead of orange/black.
I hope that makes sense, it's a little hard to explain.

11. Few things more delightful than a kitten. |

Cutest creatures I've ever been around, and they're endlessly entertaining (and occasionally infuriating). Full of surprises.
