I'll go first. My brother, Steve, is the drummer for Baboon. Among other things, Baboon was featured on an episode of Walker: Texas Ranger around ten years ago.

4. Well, let's see...
I'm friends with some folks who appeared on the Jenny Jones show about 10 years ago. Also, I'm friends with Mike Keneally, former Frank Zappa and Steve Vai guitarist/keyboardist.

3. My ex is nationally known in his particular field of music
Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 11:26 AM by lizziegrace
Two guys we were in college with have gone on to do big things. One has played on every Dixie Chicks album (as well as every other "A" list country artist) and the other had his own band for a while and has done work with Steve Earle.

Another friend's band was playing on the rooftop in the party scene at the Peabody in "The Firm".

One of my ex's students is a jazz drummer in the NYC area and plays with all the big names.

I got to stay at home and raise Lelapin. ;-)

5. No relations.
But, I have friends who have worked as sidemen with McCartney's Wings, Sinatra, Toby Keith, Tom Jones, Adrian Belew, Rod Stewart, Lynard Skynard, Andy Williams, and Marcus Miller. If I sat down to really think about it, there would be many more.

6. Kind of many degrees of seperation, but....
I work with the mother of a professional rock drummer (Van Halen, I think, and another big-name band now).

My brother almost married a woman whose son was a professional guitarist in the 1980s (Mr. Big). I lost track of where he is now.

My sister lived with a guy for 10 years who was "famous" locally and actually cut a CD. He dedicated it to her.

That's all I got.

10. Baboon has done much, much greater things than that, lol.
My daughter will be famous, I'm sure of it. Perhaps for the song "Adorable Stalker" she has written about stalking Regina Spektor.

http://www.myspace.com/teddyguh

Regina, why can't my dreams be our realities?

I know you sang for me
"Come on Teddy, come ON Teddy"
Now I sing for you
Come on Reggie, come on Reggie

Regina, why can't my dreams be our realities?
Regina, let's turn lyrics into realities

I lie in wait ... let's date
I've eyes for you ... let's do
Each other, perchance
One another, happenstance
You plus me, peradventure
I'll feel your dentures

Regina, why can't my dreams be our realities?
Regina, why can't I procure loving feelings from ya?

You know, I'd be the ultimate Respektor
We'd live like queens on our melodic money
So won't you make me your Misses Spektor?
I'm down on my knees, be my life partner please

Regina, why can't my dreams be our realities?
Regina, why? WHY?!?!?!?
Let's turn lyrics to realities
Why can't I turn lyrics to realities?

Come on, Reggie ... Come on, Regina

11. I'm distantly related to Eddie Vedder's ex-wife.
She's a musician in her own right, but it's less interesting to say "my great-grandmother's first cousin's granddaughter co-founded Hovercraft."

I don't think I've ever met her, though.
That's about it.

12. depends on what you mean
What constitutes "making it"? I was in a band that released records internationally, and we toured large parts of the US, but we never really made a living off of it. We could have if we'd wanted to tour forever and not have permanent homes, sleep on couches and in motels, eat fast food every day, etc., but that didn't happen and we gave it up to do other things.

In my own tiny field of experimental classical music I get performances all over the world (a few coming up in New York soon), but it doesn't really pay, and the audience is almost non-existent. I would estimate that depending on where the lines of my field are drawn, there are anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand people involved in it worldwide. For example, a cd that I produced was just released on a German record label, and I think we'll all be very happy if it sells 500 copies. None of this is done for money, just out of love. Grants funded the cds, and some of the concerts. With only a few exceptions, everyone I know who does this either gets their money from working in academia (I guess I'd count myself in that group) or working jobs outside of music, or in more conventional fields of music (two other things that I've done).

I have a cousin who is a well respected classical guitarist and has won various national competitions, but the performing doesn't pay much. As he famously said to me once, "compliments don't pay the bills".

I do have lots of friends and acquaintances who are more well known and make more money from music, but I don't know who to mention specifically.

I have never been on Walker: Texas Ranger, and am very jealous of your brother.

16. Would you mind naming the ensemble?
Being on Walker gets the members of Baboon royalty checks once in a while, but you can't really live off of that, either.

They've seriously busted their butts over the last twelve years, though, which is a lot longer than the shelf life of many bands more famous than they.

17. My old band, you mean?
There's a link to our super bare-bones website from my profile. We were only really around for about 5 years. We never "broke up", but just became really busy with other stuff. I was away getting my Master's degree, and even though I took a year off to play shows, it was just too much of a pain. The other 1/2 of the band (it was never more than a duo, except for a few times friends did things with us) was also interested in settling down and wanted the money that only comes from a job where you can't take a few days off every month to go play shows in other cities. We may do stuff together again, and would like to, but now we live in different countries and are broken old men. If one of us wins the lotto, I think we'd probably make another album. I never get royalty cheques because I've always felt that music should be free, but my former partner still gets occasional cheques, but they've never been for much. I might compromise my principals and join up with ASCAP or something soon, because I guess from the performances of my compositions that I'm getting I would be making a few hundred bucks a year, which I could certainly use.
