We want to repaint our kitchen in warm colors, and all these colors seem so sterile.

Oh, and we don't want to spend 1000 bucks. :P

4. Make that bisque, not almond. My mistake.

House of Kewpie and I have an electric Frigidaire. I thought it was almond, but now I suspect that it might be bisque.

7. Here are a few others
Maytag
Whirlpool
Another Whirlpool
Hotpoint
Frigidaire

I'm not hawking for Lowe's--we bought ours there, so I knew that they had a number of models in "bisque."

9. How appliance model numbers generally work:
it's something like

WSLP1100WW (iirc, that's my washing machine) where the letters at the front are the line, the numbers in the middle are the model, and the numbers at the end are the color (in this case, white on white) so if you see a model you like but the display is white, have the salesperson check stock for the bisque/biscuit (same thing, different manufacturers) code, which varies a bit but is generally bq, a or aa (since it's still really almond.)

Smaller stores are generally more willing to order in product, but the big chains can get you anything in their warehouse if you can find somebody who knows how to check and takes the time to do so- the best time to get somebody competent with a moment to spare is usually weekday mornings or early afternoons.

8. You can paint the one you have
Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 03:19 PM by Whoa_Nelly
there are now very good enamel spray paints specifically for painting ranges.

Although, if you choose this method, would recommend taking it to a professional to have it done.

Now...
If you have white as the trim/accent color to offset and brighten any warm tones or color ranges you choose for painting the walls, then a white appliance would do well.

Stainless also can be a good choice. It really is considered to be a "neutral" in terms of fitting in with any color scheme.

I mention these two choices because by having a range that is a specific color can be difficult to match in with the color scheme, can become outdated looking in a short period of time, and if becomes chipped, scorched or scratched, can be difficult to match up again well.

I would go with white, and use a bright white trim/ceiling paint to accent the wall color.

What is the age of the house? What style is the architecture inside and out?

BTW--those ranges that have special color are usually more expensive ($2.5K-8K :yoiks: )

(just tying to be a good Interior Designer here for you :) ) :hi:

14. We're trying to give the kitchen a "Mexican" look
The house is a small postwar 2-bedroom with wood floors, but the kitchen was redone about 15 years ago and it's a total freak show.... palest lavender with a fruity wall border, vinyl floors, and gray countertops. With the flourescent lighting, it looks like a morgue. :o

17. Some things to read, look at and think about :-)
Some Mexican remodel articles:

http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/dc_design_kitchen/article/0,1793,HGTV_3375_3229368,00.html

A couple of articles about practicality:
http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/11-5-2001-5847.asp

http://articles.directorym.com/Ideas_for_Minor_Kitchen_Remodeling_Hacienda_Heights_CA-r854968-Hacienda_Heights_CA.html

Look through these images for some ideas:
http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=&suggon=0&as_qdr=all&q=mexican+kitchen+&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title

Best advice before you begin:
Start looking at pictures, magazines.
Print pics or tear out pages and save them without first deciding just what the "it" is that made you like the photo.

After collecting pics, go through them for:
Color appeal
Elements, such as tile, counter tops, wall finish, etc. that you like
After actually examining all the "it" that you like, narrow down to practical choices as to what you can do, and what would probably have to be done by a professional.
As for applainces, you may wnat to let that be decided after you determine the overall look you want.
And since you wnat a Mexican look, black or stainless may actually be really good choices.

Start with one or several focus pieces, such as a terra cotta or wrought iron Mexican style sun, perhaps some tiles you like (backsplash tiling is something you CAN do your self...it's really pretty easy. You can even add tiling above an already coved formica backsplash to add texture, color and dimension.)

Using those focal pieces, decide on your color scheme to highlight them as focal points.

Floor ideas:
For a floor that has concrete underneath--tear up existing flooring, and give it an acid wash treatemnt, finishing off with a polyurethane coat to seal

Wood subflooring underneath--if the current vinyl flooring is in good condition (not torn or coming up in places), and seem pretty well adhered, you can use place and press tiles over the existing vinyl.
There are really good place and press tiles now available.

And here's a good article on what to know about changing the flooring:

Seriously, stainless isn't sterile. It's futuristic. Pretend you're living in 'Space Age' style.
