Is it possible to learn to be more decisive?
Honestly, I am the most indecisive person ever (I blame it on the fact that I'm a Pisces ;))

So I'm bored, right? So I figure I'll watch a movie.. but which movie do I watch? I can't decide. Hmm ok.. maybe I'll read! Oh, but I just finished my last book and now I need to pick a new one to read.. can't decide. I know! I'll give myself a much need pedicure.. wait which color do I pick!?...

It's horrible. :o

No, on second thought, you can both sit in separate corners. Or else bad things might happen. :P

12. Hey, you're weren't supposed to give me a serious answer.
And I don't think it's so much lack on confidence, as much as I like lots of things and I'm happy with most all out comes. So it's hard to think which one to pick over the others. Or maybe you're right?

14. i think its both. i love a lot of foods/colors etc .. so in those areas its hard for me to make a
decision because my palate is just larger

however for bigger decision, the possibility of failure is why i hate making decision. thats very likely a confidence issue :)

16. Like anything, practice makes perfect
Give yourself artificial deadlines. Get a book on decision making. Part of learning to be more decisive is learning how to evaluate your choices.

For example, I use a modified version of the engineering model I was taught many years ago.

Say you need to find a solution or choose something. First I list my critical criteria (these are things any choice or solution has to have).

If we take your movie choice, the criteria would be a movie you are able to watch.

Then you think about deal breakers.

In your movie case, you eliminate the types of movies you don't want to watch.

Finally you develop quick criteria to judge your choices.

Again in your example. That could be a genre you are in the mood to watch. Others could be you are looking for a short movie or a light hearted movie or an intense movie or whatever. Then you go over you choices and decide which best meet the criteria.

With time and practice, this sort of mental exercise becomes quick and second nature.

17. Yep
None of the given choices are irreversible things. Throw a movie in, if you aren't into it, put in another. Same with nails, same with the book. I used to dither constantly over inconsequential things, but decided I was tired of wasting time and just went the "what the hell" route. I can't decide what book to read? I just grab one and if I'm not into it 2 chapters in, I put it down and pick another.

As for me, is it ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care.

41. you need to give yourself more choices
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 05:15 AM by CreekDog
 :hide:

okay but here's some actual advice:

when you are being indecisive, stop for a moment and decide how important a decision this is, then based on that, decide how much time and effort you are going to spend making it.

thus, what movie to watch during the next 2 hours of a quiet night? spend 5 minutes deciding.

for more important decisions give yourself more time, but break up the decision into steps and singularly go through those steps without worrying about the others until you get to them.
