Watching the newest assortment of VW commercials, am I the only one who REALLY wishes
that instead of a current VW (what they're selling) I could get a black classic-look Beetle like the "spokes-car"?? Cooler, in my eyes.

Hmmm...

Porsche design #60 (right,) original design by Ferdinand Porsche...his most famous, according to the souvenir book from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart---a very cool place (wish I could've done the factory tour) :)

I love the old VWs...these and Thing, the Van, the Karmann Ghia, the Squareback, the Notchback....

Call me crazy. Or...not?

6. Even a ruthless, psychopathic dictator can have the...
...occasional good idea. Sort of like Shrub deciding to snack on pretzels. ;)

2. I love the old Beetles too
When I was growing up, all the rural route postal delivery people drove Beetles because they could always get through, no matter what. School would be called off, the roads would be socked in with snow and no one would be on them....

... and then you'd see the mailman drive by.

3. Had three of them, and loved all of'em!
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 09:48 PM by Whoa_Nelly
And my first VW love was a snappy 1972 camper in Butterscotch color!

Lived and traveled in that thing for almost three years!

ahhhh..the days..... :wistful:

(mine was not a pop-top. But I did make my own tie-dye curtains for it, including a velcro T-piece that went across the ceiling and hung down between the two front seats. Also took out the seat behind drivers seat and bolted in a 4-drawer dresser.)

7. My best and oldest friend is a VW van diehard.
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 10:01 PM by Drum
He owns two of them, which he has lovingly maintained and improved for almost three decades. He'd like that I started this thread, and he would love your reply. :)

I've driven a few of the older models (though, sob, not the Ghia) and for a pitifully-short few months I owned and adored one of these:

10. I used to own a 1963 Red VW Convertible - black top, white interior with
thick white walls.

Sort of like this one

http://www.vwtrendsweb.com/features/0109vwt_12+1963_Volkswagen_Beetle+Red_Convertible_Passenger_Side_Rear_View.jpg

I had a choice, keep the VW or buy my house - pamper and care and put money in my collector toy car or live in a house.

The house won. -- I miss it, I like the looks of the old VW compared to the beetles of today.

Now I am driving a White VW Cabrio convertible with a black top. Got it for a steal with not that many miles and it looks new.

To be honest, the old VWs ride was rough and very loud.

12. Are folks upthread
just blanketing all design as political? I get that this is DU, but I posted this here in the Lounge in more of an aesthetic frame of mind.

16. My response was, at least I thought, obviously a joke.
If two popcorn smilies can't convey that, then we need scrolling disclaimers as part of DU 3.0.

18. From a design standpoint, the Type 1 is fantastic.
You can't find another design that had the sort of staying power that the Type 1 had as a design. It had a timeless look.

That being said, you have a better chance of surviving a crash in the New Beetle. Then again, you have VW's famous reliability issues and the fact that it takes more than an amateur knowledge of engines to fix it. But at least the heater works!

Another case of longevity that I think works better: the Porsche 911. The basic idea has been to have modern technology and safety features while retaining the basic design of the original model.
