2. I cry for Pittsburgh.
Just grin and bear it, Pirates fans. As annoying as they may be, Primanti Brothers will get a good boost from the business.

4. This is pretty exciting
But it's a little mystifying that in 11 years of interleague play, this hasn't happened yet.

6. They had to wait until PNC was finished,
3 Rivers Stadium was not a great attraction.

PNC is awesome.

5. Before Maz arrived at 'homeplate'
did he touch firstbase, secondbase and thirdbase? :P

Trivia: So many people mobbed Mazeroski as he reached home that Bill Jackowski, the plate umpire, later said he couldn't tell if Maz actually touched the plate.

Wouldn't it be interesting to analyze that on replay? :D

7. Pirates club Yankees, 12-5
The Pirates' 19-hit assault blew away the New York Yankees, 12-5, tonight at PNC Park in the teams' first Pittsburgh meeting since the 1960 World Series.

9. Go Bucs
Today
Game: Pirates vs. New York Yankees, 7:05 p.m., PNC Park.
TV/Radio: FSN Pittsburgh, WPGB-FM (104.7).
Pitching: LHP Zach Duke (4-4, 3.91) vs. RHP Joba Chamberlain (1-2, 2.36).
Key matchup: Everyone vs. the colorful, flamethrowing Chamberlain. New York has won three of his four starts since converting him from relief, and he has a 2.46 ERA in that span.
Of note: The Pirates' .992 fielding percentage so far this month -- six errors -- is No. 1 in Major League Baseball.

12. RAIN DELAYS PIRATES vs. YANKEES
9:37 p.m.

Rain has stopped again -- but -- wow! -- more lightning. Some fans are slowly returning to their seats. Wow! More thunder. What an evening. Some moderate squeegie action by the grounds crew on the tarp. Might be cosmetic at best. Just heard that Dan Giese, who's scheduled to start tomorrow's first game for the Yankees is at the Pittsburgh airport. He was going to fly to New York early to get some rest. Now he's stuck at the airport here. The odd things continue to pile up.

14. Tonight's Yankee/Pirate game was -- finally -- called off
10:46 p.m.

Here's a bizarre thing from after the game being called. Yankee pitcher Dan Giese, scheduled to start the first game of a day/night doubleheader at Yankee Stadium tomorrow, was at Pittsburgh International today to fly home ahead of the team to get some rest. He was told his 4 o'clock flight would be delayed an hour. He went to get something to eat and went back to the gate at 4:30.

"The plane was gone," he said. "They said they paged me. I didn't hear it."

He was rebooked on a 6 o'clock flight. That flight never left because of the bad weather.

"It was pretty chaotic," he said.

He then returned to PNC Park about 10 o'clock tonight to learn the game had been called off.

What did he think of the Pittsburgh airport?

"Not bad," he said. "Good mall. Lots of places to eat."

The capper?

Had play resumed tonight, Giese would have been used in relief of starter Mike Mussina, who had pitched two innings but who wouldn't have pitched anymore.

10:26 p.m.

Tonight's Yankee/Pirate game was -- finally -- called off because of rain, lightning and thunder after a delay of 2 1/2 hours. It will be made up at PNC Park July 10 at 7:05. July 10 is a mutual off-day for the Yankees, who were scheduled to fly to Toronto that day. The Pirate off-day that day is between home series against Houston and St. Louis.
