Poll question: BEST VOCAL GROUP of the 1970s?
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 08:26 PM by NightTrain
Yeah, I know. Like we really need another poll in the Lounge right now! :eyes:

Last weekend, however, I created a poll asking folks to vote for the Best Vocal Group of the 1960s. The response was so good, I thought a follow-up survey for the '70s might also be fun. So here we go!

As always, if either space limitations or my fading memory caused me to leave out one of your favorites, you're more than welcome to write it in.

And did quite well, IIRC!

9. yeah, You MUST include ABBA
though I already voted unfortunately.

CSNY is great for the 60s, but the 70s are OWNED by ABBA

8. I voted for the Chi-Lites, then I saw the Staple Singers. Damn.
I would have voted for EWF, but they don't fit my idea of a "vocal" group.

Rack one up for Pops and the girls.

BTW, I know you can answer this NT. Who did "Backstabbers?" Great song and I just have to know.

David Pack was a great singer!

On edit: I guess they were not actually a vocal group, since they had only
one singer, but I've always thought they were underated.

And the Chi-lites rule!

13. Chi-Lites.
Only Eugene Record would think to use a harmonica as the lead instrument on a soul record ("Oh Girl"), have the chops to make the song GREAT, and be able to have that great song not lost along the wayside but become a huge hit.

Record is one of the most underrated composers of his era. I honestly wouldn't put him very far behind Mayfield.

17. Not really.
I limited the poll to groups whose primary focus was on vocal harmony. As great as P-Funk was, harmony was pretty far away from their top priority! :-)

19. Given the Choices, I Went With "Manhattan Transfer"
Their harmonies are the ultimate. But there were so many good vocal groups in the '70s, including ABBA, Cornelius Bros & Sister Rose, The Spinners, The Chi-Lites, etc, etc, etc.....

20. Yeah. God, how I wish these polls had more than ten options!
Among the deserving groups I had to leave out for reasons of space:

Bloodstone
Blue Magic
The Brothers Johnson
The Commodores
The Emotions
The Four Tops
Fourteen Karat Soul
Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds
The Honey Cone
The Jackson 5
The Main Ingredient
The Moments
The Supremes
The Sylvers
Tavares
The Temptations
The Whispers

I must have been all of 9 years old, had the AM radio hidden underneath my pillow cause Mom would have taken it away if she saw it. Couldn't go to sleep until I'd hear the local top 40 station play "Have You Seen Her."

I hereby declare this poll invalid. "Afternoon Delight", like it or not, is a damn staple of the 1970s.
