Post a song that never gets old and always sounds fresh.
My pick: "Blister in the Sun" by the Violent Femmes.

This video is nuts. I'd never seen it before. http://youtube.com/watch?v=hYZkoI1ggEw

50. Great choice!
I have two different versions of that song, but there's another Price version with slightly different lyrics that I haven't been able to locate (a friend had a mix tape with it back in the day). That's a song with a long history, and Dick Clark was actually just a small bump in that history. Great music.

89. Thank you for your response.
That's interesting what you said about the other version...I seem to remember reading about that, but I don't know that I've ever heard it. Is that the one that begins "The night was clear.." instead of "The night was Claire..."? If I'm remembering it right, didn't they want to "clean up" the song lyrics so it wouldn't offend some of the listening public?

At any rate...it's a great song from "Mr. Personality"

97. The conventional wisdom has it that there are two versions by Price
But I know I've heard a third. Yeah, Dick Clark wanted the lyrics cleaned up before he would play it on bandstand, because he didn't think teenagers should be boppin' to a song about murder. But there are two versions by Price with the original lyrics. One of them is bouncier, with a more lively tempo, and that's the one I've never been able to find again.

And the song itself is an old classic. Wikipedia has a page devoted to the subject, and there are web sites devoted to it as well.

73. One of the greatest intros stolen from the Rolling Stones, anyway.
It is a really good song, but when they asked to use a sample from the Andrew Oldham Orchestra's version of The Rolling Stone's "The Last Time", they ended up sampling more than they were legally allowed to and ended up losing songwriting credits to Jagger and Richards. I guess they never figured on the song becoming as big of a hit as it did and assumed that no one would notice.

As an aside, Lucky Man was another cool track from the Verve.

Their lead singer, Anton Newcombe is a schizophrenic though... I've met him and had discussions with him that seem to feel more like channel surfing than dialog. That, and he's extremely volatile when agitated.

71. "Can't find my way home." Blind Faith.
Come down off your throne and leave your body alone.
Somebody must change.
You are the reason Ive been waiting so long.
Somebody holds the key.

But Im near the end and I just aint got the time
And Im wasted and I cant find my way home.

Come down on your own and leave your body alone.
Somebody must change.
You are the reason Ive been waiting all these years.
Somebody holds the key.

Chorus

But I cant find my way home.
But I cant find my way home.
But I cant find my way home.
But I cant find my way home.
Still I cant find my way home,
And I aint done nothing wrong,
But I cant find my way home.

75. Tempted by Squeeze. Best use of organ ever.
As soon as I hear the electric organ intro for Tempted, I get chills. The song never gets old. I'll also add "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Stones. Richards' guitar work is just sublime, and the bass hook is hypnotic. As a third, I'll add the best single ever to feature the banjo, "Sing" by Travis. Beck's "Sexxlaws" comes in a close 2nd in that category.

Edited on Fri Jun-27-08 03:07 PM by southlandshari
Ok. I'm old. But it is a damn good song.

If you don't believe me, I can get a witness. Or two.

And my witnesses have big boobs and wear few clothes.
They are also really smart, of course.

:D

While I'm showing my grey hairs, I might as well go for broke...other songs that always sound fresh to me:

Boogie Shoes - 30 plus years later, K.C. & the Sunshine Band can still make the young girls dance.

All you parents out there should appreciate the positive dental hygiene message embedded here. Fresh music, fresh breath and all that....

I dare any of you to call Earth Wind & Fire's classic "September" stale after watching this most excellent, cheesy-to-the-point-of-being-cool salute to the original.

A goofy guy dancing like a sprinkler on a desktop, locker-humping band geeks who will one day rule the world and elements of Hot for Teacher, including graphic mascot spanking scenes, united in song?

What more could anyone possibly ask for?

:woohoo:

Ok, ok...just to prove I'm not a total dinosaur, let me throw in something a bit more contemporary with Donavon Frankenreiter's It Don't Matter. This song will never get old in my book.

And...last, but never, ever least....

The most timeless anthem of all-time. Fresh eight days a week.

It was a good time to be alive and disease-free.

Jeez ... I should check things, first. The 13th Floor Elevators originally did "She Lives," which was remade by The Judybats in the 80s ... That's what I was thinking of. That's another song that I hadn't originally realized was a remake, like "Alone Again, Or."

117. First, we'll start off with the greatest video ever made . . .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRWTz3zY1WY

Then, we move on to some killer arrangement and heart-felt pain from a not-heralded-enough genius:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GWWNxBNlyQ

We'll season it up with a rarely-seen but still classic piece of carnival weirdness:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbBwFdKDaKw

Plus a bit of Swedish hot kitsch (I'm ignoring the two Kin Shriner-looking schmucks, if you haven't guessed):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuB8xWeA59I

Our entrees for the evening would be by the originators of pretty much everything heard on college and alternative radio from 1987 onward:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luK9-bQVj0k

Followed by one of the most heartfelt pieces that got me through a lot of hard times in my life:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_hY80oaQWE

Gotta include this one . . . really underrated songsmith here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCpj4WLesVA

What the hell . . . I've loved this song for 30 years now, might as well post all three parts:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwctZz6wwT0&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaygITgll80&feature=related

Finally . . . a piece of pop greatness:

Thank you for watching. Enjoy the scenery:
