Can you get Internet service without a phone or cable line?
Anyone know if there is such a thing?

What does wireless Internet mean?

1. Let me try and explain it
I am not a certified techie, or anything, but let me try.

Wireless internet is an extension of an existing internet service.

For example, I have cable modem service. I have a wireless router, therefore I can get internet access anywhere in my house or yard. You don't have to pay for wireless service unless you are using someone else's cable modem or another type of internet connection.

Therefore, you would still need a phone or cable line in order to have a wireless connection.

Did that help?

4. Some friends of mine use starband
They live in a rural area and it's the only ISP that will service them. They're very happy with them, for what that's worth.

2. WI-FI (wireless fidelity) hotspots are located in a lot of hotels
restaurants, airports, convention centers, etc. WiFi uses wireless internet via prepaid or subscription.

For example: http://www.usawirelessinternet.com

9. I had a friend run my phone bill up
They bundled the package and hooked up all three services on one bill. They cut the phone off and when they did that the Internet and cable went also and I am going nuts.

I hate cable companies and my building has a deal with them so I can't get anyone else in because they are the exclusive company.

13. That's one thing good about here
At least they have two companies. From what I understand you can get the net on your cell phone but it's expensive.

I bought the phone about 10 days ago and it has the web on it but they aren't too helpful about helping me get on the Internet.

How to set up and other things. I had it on mine when I had Sprint but never used it because of the price.

6. Direct TV has a satellite Broadband service
You have a transmitter/receiver dish on your roof. I had it for a couple of years while in the country, it works pretty well, but is pricey.

14. Not with the satellite transmitter....
They did/do have the satellite down/phone up option. But there was no phone hooked to my computer. This was good because we lost phone service as often as we lost the satellite.

12. My Sprint cellphone has that capability
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 09:43 PM by SpikeTrees
I don't use it. It just came with the phone I bought. You can buy a cable that will connect from the phone to your PC. I suppose you could look at their phones at www.sprintpcs.com . I seldom go to that site since I bought mine.

Also on this subject: the city of Cleveland plans to make a wireless internet service that has coverage over the whole city. The implementation period is long though--into the next decade I believe.

edit: my phone is a Sprint "vision" phone. My particular model is not available, apparently. The service is an extra $15/month, but it is a fast service, >200K, instead of 50K baud on a dial up modem.

16. Do you know if US Cellular has that cable?
Maybe that is why I can't get the Internet on my cell phone and they told me that I could search websites, etc.

If they will do that I can get reinstalled.

I am going crazy because I can't watch TV or log onto the Internet.

I guess I will have to read some books for several weeks.

What books are you thinking of reading? I hope you get it straightened out.

I'm thinking of curling up with "The Cilistine Prophecy".

29. Progressive book recommendations.
"How Much Are You Making on the War, Daddy?" -- William Hartung. Skewers the * regime on war profiteering by numbnuts' friends.

"The Price of Loyalty" -- Ron Suskind's book on Paul O'Neill. A devastating insight to how * is destroying this country.

"The Great Unraveling" -- the great Paul Krugman of the New York Times dissects the * regime's looting of this country.

All three are must reads for liberals and anyone who believes in this country.

26. Don't know what size city you're in
But most have a wireless ISP. They broadcast a wireless internet signal similar to a household wireless network just on a lot larger scale. The only catch that I know of is you have to have line-of-site to their transmitter.

Here's the one in my town to give you an idea. Wireless Roanoke

27. yes
There are apparently war-chalkers who mark houses where you can use your wireless laptop to get into someone's wireless cable service, for instance. Someone was using my friend's service. I think you just have to park your car (or your butt, if there's a bench) in the right place.

Some restaurants, coffee sbops, and of course hotels have it. There are spots at the airport.

I suppose one day you will be able to sit anywhere in a city and log on with your laptop. Sometimes the wireless access is free (like at some cafes) or sometimes it is "borrowed" (as with my friend's).

28. Depending upon where you live...
There may be wireless internet service available. This is what I use:

www.monetmobile.com

It's a fairly new market from what I understand, and I think they're testing it in mid-size markets to work out the bugs. I've had it for a couple of months and have been pretty happy with it so far.

Anyway, you may want to see if something like that is available in your area.
