So the College World Series is over, and the winner is ... |
|
the Fresno State Bulldogs. Fresno State lost (after blowing a lead) the first game of the three-game final series against Georgia, but then came back to win game two last night and game three tonight to take home the national championship.
It was, all in all, a huge upset--one of the biggest cinderella stories of any national champion that I can remember, in any sport. The only reason Fresno State was even in the NCAA Baseball Championship was because they won the WAC tournament--otherwise they wouldn't have made the field. They were a #4 seed out of four in the regional, and they were the first #4 seed to ever even make it through the regional and superregional to the College World Series, yet alone to win it all.
Congrats to Fresno State and their fans :toast:

1. Congrats Fresno State! |

I was pulling for the Dawgs from my old alma mater UGA - they won the college world series way back in my old college days - but Fresno State earned every hit, run and win they scored on the way to the title this year.
Very well played, Bulldogs!

3. It's about the only baseball I watch anymore |
|
The CWS is fun and exciting. The kids are having a great time and the action is hot and furious. MLB seems so tame after watching College baseball. Sort of like the major leaguers are bored most of the time.

9. Welcome to DU from a Geogia Bulldog! |
|
I follow the Braves and the Bulldogs so I've had a busy baseball summer! Athens, GA has been abuzz with baseball excitement! The super regional games were played here at Foley Field and ESPN covered some of the games! My boyfriend was sitting behind home plate at one of the Georgia games and got on TV one day!
I listened to our local sports broadcast team on the radio even while watching on TV because the ESPN guys were idiots IMHO. 960 AM "The Ref" has less fluff and more sports statistics!
Enjoy your time here at DU! :hi:

Talked to a former Georgia player yesterday who was obviously rooting for his old team. But the Fresno Bulldogs really took it to 'em.

6. How 'bout these Dawgs! |
|
Congratulations, Fresno State!
Both my undergrad and law school alma maters (New Orleans and Arkansas) had good seasons but got bounced in the opening round of the playoffs this spring.

8. Congratulations to Fresno State. My Georgia Bulldogs played great too! |
|
I'm a Georgia graduate. It was sad to see the Dogs lose but both teams were awesome and it was a lot of fun to follow the GA Bulldogs progress through the SEC championship to the regional, super regionals and the CWS! Everyone here in Athens has had baseball fever! It was all very exciting!
Next on the sports agenda: August 30, 2008 is the opening homegame for Georgia Football! Go Dawgs!

11. Insult to injury: Our local sports people are swooning over them |
|
they're our conference rivals, you weenies. Did Michigan get all verklempt when Ohio State beat Miami for the title? "What a great day for the Big Ten!" :sarcasm:
How quickly they forget: Colt Brennan suffered a concussion late last season and was never quite the same afterwards.
The injury occurred when a Fresno State player rammed him with his helmet. :grr:
Ironically, this set the stage for UH's colossal Sugar Bowl faceplant -- to Georgia. :eyes:
And don't go throwing that prestigious women's sailing championship of ours :sarcasm; in my face, either. That's not even an NCAA sport.
