Now that we're down to one cat I know which one was the naughty one

Daughter #2 moved out last week with her kitty and now it's clear who sees no need for a litter box. Anyone have any luck re-training an adult neutered male to his litter box? He's not really accustomed to being any only cat, but I'm not adding anyone in 'til we get the issue under control. He's a sweet and loving kitty, but this has got to stop. We have multiple boxes in the basement and upstairs, although there is no good place for one on the main floor. Help!
