anyone know about A/Cs on the board?
Hate to be a bother but we have a portable A/C unit in our bedroom. It was working fine this afternoon and I shut it off for a while. We just turned it back on and now the a/c seems to be having trouble working.

It is making a strange humming noise every once in a while like it is trying to kick on fully and each time the hum comes the lights in our house dim slightly.

Is there something major going on?

Yes we have drained the water and clearned out the filter.

1. Several possibilties...
1.Poor power connection resulting in insufficient voltage to unit (loose wall outlet, wiring, bad
circuit breaker, etc).
2.Compressor starting components have failed (start/run capacitor, PTC or permanent temperature
coefficient which is a combination start assist overload relay assembly.
Symptoms for above include compressor attempting to start, failing to do so, humming loudly, perhaps
shaking or vibrating while attempting to start and then a soft click as the compressor's internal
winding protector (usually a bi-metal switch inside the compressor shell) opens and the unit shuts
down. The lights dim due to the high amp draw on the compressor as it tries to crank without it's
start components working (it's pulling locked rotor amps).
3.The compressor is locked up mechanically internally.(lights dimming and humming occur here, too).
4.You did not allow sufficient time for the high and low side (suction and discharge) pressures to
equalize before re-starting the unit.Wait five to ten minutes. Hope this helps.
