Got my first paycheck today, so I have a question for my fellow lounge lizards... |
|
Edited on Fri Jun-27-08 06:37 PM by DarkTirade
now that I can afford a cel phone, is there ANY reason to keep a land line? I'm planning on getting a cel tomorrow, and I really can't think of a good reason to keep the land line anymore. It's only 20 bucks a month, but that's 20 bucks that could go to other things.
*edit* Also wanted to add that I'm talking about my own personal line... there's a regular landline in the house already. :)

1. Only reason I keep mine is that it serves my security system. |
|
My alarm won't call out without a dial tone.
Maybe there's a workaround for me, but other than that, I'd go full cellular...

Alarm and Tivo are the only reasons I have a landline. I never use it to actually call someone anymore.

We use ours for the fios feed into the house...
We also have a fax, which requires a land line...
And, I could be wrong about this, but are there questions about the 911 dispatchers having trouble finding you if you used a cell phone to call in an emergency?
Or has that been solved?
Anyway, we use our land line a lot!
:hi:

3. Well, my land line is a Vonage internet phone |
|
so it has pretty much the same problems a cel phone would have for the 911 thing. :)
And my grandparents have a regular land line here.

7. I have only my cell phone. |
|
The only problem I can foresee is that if your phone goes out for some reason, then no one can get in touch with you. But I usually see that as a good thing. :P

8. Well, there's still the house phone here. |
|
Normally I'd be content with just my own line here, but I'm out enough these days and I might need to be contacted while I'm out... so getting a cel phone makes sense for me. :)

I use the land line to call back people that I want to talk to when they call me on my cell. Most people who call me on the land line are people that I don't want to talk to,

Side effect of having not much of a life. :\
I just have one for necessary communication and what little of a life I actually have.

13. Just a personal line? |
|
No. None at all.
When I lived in tornado country, I kept a land line because whenever a tornado would go rumbling through, invariably the cells would get jammed. A land line is better for those emergency situations, but if there's a "house phone" other than your personal line, I really would have trouble thinking of a reason to keep it if you have a cell.

15. That's what I was thinking. |

I'd have to give out the new number to everybody, but that's about it.

17. Hmm... was just on the phone with my brother and he made a pretty good point for keeping the land |
|
line...
Vonage has free call forwarding, and they're not dicks.
Cel phone companies generally are dicks.
So if I keep giving out my Vonage number to everyone and just have it forward to my cel phone, then if my cel phone company dicks me around and I have to get rid of it, I don't have to worry about losing my number. Because the number I'd give to everyone would be the same one even if I had to get a new phone.

21. I have a Vonage phone. |
|
I don't make many calls so I use the cheaper one they offer, only 20 bucks a month after all the taxes and whatnot.
And I can have it do call forwarding to my cel, so I can just keep giving people my home number and I'll still get the calls when I'm out.
