Where can I find free wireless Internet while on the road?
Edited on Sat Jun-28-08 11:51 AM by Wcross
I am driving from Tennessee up to New York soon. I want to be able to check my e-mails & use my laptop to check for hotels. Do some resturants or places offer free wireless?

7. Starbucks...
offers two free hours a day to people with registered gift cards used within the last 30 days. After the initial two hours, you can pay by the hour at a reduced rate.

Otherwise, it's something like $9 a day. I don't recall exactly because I have unlimited free usage through work.

Other benefits of registered cards include free soy or premium dairy, free syrups, free refills on brewed coffee within an hour, and a voucher in the mail for a free beverage. Best of all, if you lose your registered card...it can be replaced. Other benefits may be rolled out over time.

Registering a Starbucks Gift Card:

Purchase a Starbucks gift card for any amount between $5 and $500 dollars.

Go to http://www.starbucks.com/card/ to register the card. Choose the option with wi-fi. You will have to set-up an AT&T user account.

11. Not all Panera Breads have free access
The ones located on the Ohio Turnpike use AT&T WiFi and they charge you if you're not on an AT&T plan that features Wi-Fi usage. I found this out while driving to Chicago in May.

12. Outside any hotel, Caribou Coffee
Many resturants, University WiFi is usually locked down. Most residential areas have many open hot spots, though war-driving is the last option. While many places want you to pay, you can usually find the free ones close by.

13. Many hotels have free wifi.
Many coffee shops also have it. There are internet cafes in a lot of towns, too.

You can also pull into a fairly populated neighborhood or town and try to piggy-back onto someone else's connection. :P
