A request concerning water towers
My 4.5 year old really likes water towers. My small town has three sort of near our home, two of which he can see from our daily walks, while the third is visible when we go to certain other parts of town.

On a whim, I located a few of these towers on Live Search Maps (superior for these purposes to Google maps), and he particularly likes the Bird's Eye view. I used to live on the other side of the state, so I know of a handful of other towers, as well as the ones I used to pass on my former commute, but he'd love to see more.

Do any Loungers live near enough to a water tower that you could give an approximate location? A zip code wouldn't be bad, but it could cover a too-wide area to be easily searched. If you know a zip code and maybe a nearby street (not the actual address--just a street name), I would be most appreciative if you'd be willing to share.

Heck, you can even give your own address, if you have a water tower on your property.

Thanks for your help and indulgence. I grant that this is hardly the most pressing social concern of the day, but it's kind of fun to scan the aerial and bird's eye photos with him.

There's one in Magnolia (Seattle) near W. Dravus and 39th W.
http://www.vrseattle.com/pages/browse.php?cat_id=654

And two at 35th Ave SW & SW Myrtle St in Seattle.

edit: Oh, and one at Volunteer Park. Don't know if it's visible, though, because of surrounding trees.

Just loved things like water towers and silos when I was a young one...
...still do.

Beware!!! He may want you to stop at high-rise construction sites just to see what's going on...

Here are pictures of a Water Tower in Ventura County CA..

Look for the shadow in the last one...the tower is so light colored, tall and narrow...hard to see from an aerial shot.

Tikki...smart kid you have there.

10. The Big Peach - Clanton, AL

On I-65 between Birmingham and Montgomery is an impressively large watertower resembling a peach. Chilton County is Alabama's peach central. Adjacent fruit stands and establishments like the Peach Tower Restaurant radiate a unified civic vitality.

Clanton's big peach is 120 feet tall, and holds 500,000 gallons of water.

In Prospect Park Minneapolis, supposedly it is the highest natural point in the metro.

The "Witch's Hat" water tower is rumored to be Bob Dylan’s muse for “All Along the Watchtower”.

Edited on Sat Jun-28-08 04:18 PM by ocelot

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washburn_Park_Water_Tower

In light of its somewhat, um, phallic configuration, we used to call it the Washburn Weenie. Lat/long coordinates are: 44° 54′38.76″N, 93° 17′2.45″W.; the address is 401 Prospect Avenue.

Sure it's phallic, but isn't every rounded, cylindrical object?

Already we've tracked down quite a few of the suggested towers on Live Search Maps, but unfortunately a number of them are in locations not yet available in "bird's eye view," which really gives the best display.

Thanks again!

Edited on Mon Jun-30-08 01:39 PM by Imagine In Texas
it is painted like a big beach ball.

On Pensacola Beach, just as you come over the toll bridge from Gulf Breeze, at the intersection of Fort Pickens Road and Via De Luna Drive (SR 399), there is a big parking lot from Fort Pickens road to the water, in the middle of the parking lot is the water tower.

There is another one on Pensacola Beach that looks the same, but I havent found it on the map yet.

44. All you need is...
This website: http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/citytown.jsp

And a list of towns in Nebraska (particularly the eastern part), Iowa, or Kansas. Nearly every small town will have a water tower, and the towns are small enough that the tower wouldn't be hard to find.

My nephew went through the water tower phase too. He lives in Iowa, and made a game out of finding the tower in every town they visited. Trust me, nearly every town in that part of the country has one.
