The first day we played in the 12:15 poker tournament at the Taj Mahal. The Taj poker room is okay, but it looks like a bus station and attracts a pretty seedy element, especially at night. We were staying at the Tropicana, and played some 2-4 limit in the Trop's poker room that night. 2-4 limit is a good way to kill some time without breaking the bank. Your money will last longer than it will in video poker, at least. The next day we played the 11:00am poker tourney at the Showboat. The Showboat recently redid their poker room, and it is very nice. It faces the boardwalk with large ceiling-to-floor windows. It seemed odd at first to be experiencing natural sunlight while playing poker in a casino, but it is very nice. I finished sixth in that tourney and cashed in for about $180. That evening, my friends played a second tourney at the Showboat while I went next door to the Taj to play some 2-4 Omaha hi/lo. Like I said, the Taj can be seedy, but it's the only place that has 2-4 Omaha. On Wednesday, our last day, we all played the 11:15 tourney at the Trop. The Trop has a very well-run poker room with knowledgeable dealers, but the blind structures get a bit ridiculous late in tourneys. I got to the final table in that tourney, but since we had only 37 players to start, only 5 places were paid, and I finished 7th. :(
So, if you're a poker player, there are some decent tourneys in AC. The ones I played in were all about a $50-dollar buy in with about $15 juice. I think they give you an awful lot of bang for your buck, though, especially if you go deep enough in the tourney to get paid. If you don't mind spending a little bit more, the Borgata has better blind structures than the other AC casinos (30-minute blinds on weekends).
Here's a list of the daily poker tourneys in AC:
