1. I actually enjoyed the Mummy movies.
As long as you don't take them seriously, they're good silly fun.

6. But here's the thing about that
It's far too easy for Hollywood to make a "silly fun" movie that doesn't stand up as anything but a silly fun movie. How do we know it's easy? Because they do it all the time! That's why 90% of films based on "vintage" shows aim for campy farce, regardless of the original show's original vibe. The same is true of the Mummy series. It would be harder to put together a serious (by which I mean "serious in context") film about a rampaging mummy, and such a film is IMO frankly beyond the ability of most directors.

It's entirely possible to make an adventure film--even a preposterously supernatural adventure film--and still play it at least half seriously (again, "serious in context"}. The result, when done correctly, is a much stronger film. Hellboy is the best recent example of this that I can think of. Heck, even the first Pirates of the Caribbean successfully goes the semi-serious route.

And the worst recent example of a film that sacrificed quality for the sake of campy farce is, of course, Indiana Jones IV.

Okay, so I'm ranting. But it's late on Sunday and I'm tired of average films getting a pass because they're supposedly meant to be silly. Too much is forgiven by that simple dismissal: weak acting; vapid story; crappy CGI; etc...

8. In the case of the Mummy they actually seemed to put effort into it.
They sought out good actors, even though it wasn't a serious movie. The effects were impressive, although looking back now of course the CG doesn't look quite up to par. But that's because it's several years old. :P The script for the second one was pretty bad, but I think the first was well written. At least for the first one I don't think they sacrificed any quality, and yet they still went for silly fun. And it worked.

5. I don't get the last choice
I mean Brendan Fraser's first big hit was Encino Man, for god's sake. How can anybody be a serious actor who starred in that AND in George of the Jungle?

I enjoy just about any movie he's in. But he has been in some really odd movies in his career.

9. Rent "The Passion of Darkly Noon" sometime.
You'll have no doubt that Brendan Fraser is a serious actor after viewing that. Ashley Judd and Viggo Mortenson put in some pretty impressive performances, as well.
