It's vibe request time again |

In the continuing saga of Ashling's Ocular Exingencies, you will recall that after my cataract surgery (both eyes) in March I was doing ok until last week when I started having excessive floaters in my left eye. they got so bad that when my wife called the opthamologist they told us to come in right away, then as I was getting up to head out, there was what resembled a squirt of india ink into a glass of water.
The guy I saw sent me to Dallas where they dis laser surgery on five tears in my retina. Things got a little better after that, though I still had floaters because the hemmorage had not dissipated. The large ones, however seemed to be getting smaller and my vision in the left eye was fairly clear around all the floaters.
Over the weekend things got cloudier until last night I gradually started to lose any clarity at all and not it is like looking through apiece of dark frosted glass - at best.
We called the doctor back who is going to see me this afternoon. I am a little concerned that he is too nonchalant about it. He told me that it was probably still some bleeding into the vitreous, but that if we had to do surgery to re-attach the retina we could do that.
I don't know whether I am scared or frustrated or annoyed, or a little bit of all three.
I can still see well enough with my right eye - which is why I can write this - but there goes my depth perception. My wife keeps reassuring me that no matter what happens we will get through it together. She is my anchor. I just am concerned that I am dragging us down.
Thank goodness we have insurance right now, but if I can't continue to work this fall as a grad. assistant or maybe even go to school, what then?
I am sorry to be presumptuous, but it would be comforting to know that you guys are thinking of me.

don't panic quite yet.
Life without depth perception would not be the end of the world unless you are a professional baseball player... Other cues are there. You will adjust if you need too. I have little to no depth perception and i did not realize it until my draft physical. Oh --i really really suck at tennis so perhaps if you love tennis--oh well....
Sounds like you have a great wife. Count that as a blessing as well.
Just hang in there and do the best you can. Thats all you can do. Thats all any of us can do.

5. Update - back from the eye doctor |
|
First of all, I thought that he had more or less stopped the bleeding with all those laser bursts to my eye. However, that just stopped the retina from tearing away from the eye .. I was aware that there might sill be a little bleeding, but he tells me that what he did didn't really stop it.
So, everything is ok. But there was so much blood in my eye that he had to do an eye sonogram to see through the blood... conclusion: the retina is fine. I am even starting to see some spots of light as the blood dissipates and I can make out some shadows. It may be a few weeks before it is back to "normal."
So, it is frustrating, but not so scary anymore.
Thanks to everyone for their thoughts. :hi:
