I jes gots me a squirrell |
|
All winter we've had a houseguest. A damn squirrell. He (she's) been leaving walnuts all over. It's disconcerting to see a walnut on your chair in the morning.
It's been a constant presence but very elusive. Making all kinds of noises in the walls and ceiling, and hear it rummagoing around in rooms when nobody's there....It occasionally has been sotted. I for example, walked into a room and there it was acting like it owned the place, calmly eummaging around.
Have been setting traps around the house to try and catch it. But it eitehr was toosmart to enter, or so smart ut got in got the food and escaped before the door went down.
Finally this morning was awakened by a squaking furor and through half shut eyes I saw it scurry out.
Once again set the trap. This time success. There it was in the cage. Victory!
So I took it for a ride out into the country, opened the cage and let it go. It tore off like a bolt of lightning.....Free at last.
Only problem was it heded in the direction of our house.

17. You city folk sure are funny |

I've shot about 12 squirrels in the last 2 weeks.
They get into my bird feeder. Scare off the birds, and not only eat the birdseed, but actually eat the feeders!! (plastic)
A good pellet gun solves all probs. No "discharging a firearm in city limits" since it's not a firearm, and the squirrels dont come back. Try it.
And grey squirrels are good in stew :-)

trap, I twirl it around enough to make it a little dizzy before I put it in the car, then twirl it a little more before I set it free. I don't know if it really helps, but I don't think I've had any "return guests". ;-)

Well we took enough twists and turns on the roads that maybe it accomplished the same thing.

A few years ago we had a family of Brush Mice take up residence in our basement. Eventually they worked ther way up stairs. I created a clever mouse trap using an old, deep diaper pail that hadn't been used in years. I put some sun flower seeds and bird seed in the bottom and set it near the edge of my workbench. The mice saw the feed, jumped into the pail and couldn't climb back out. There were four of them in there.
Brush mice don't look like house mice. They look more like Beatrix Potter characters.
Anyway, I live across the street from the local zoo so I took them ver there and released them in the field. When I turned around and looked, they were hopping back toward the house. The next evening, they WERE BACK! Once again, I captured all four. I swear when I looked in the pail they were looking at me and asking, "okay, you took us to the zoo, can we go to the movies this time? This time Itook them for a ride out into the woods and released them. They haven't been back but every summer I see some of their ancestors running through the brush at the zoo.
I keep the old diaper pail handy.

19. When I was growing up |
|
we always had squirrels in our attic. My dad would catch them, take them into the Arboretum, and let them loose. We never seemed to be able to deplete the supply, however. So my dad bought some Lady Clairol hair dye (black) and started marking the squirrels before he would release them.
Sure enough, they would travel MILES to come back to our house - our little pinto squirrels! Persistent little buggars.
