24. yes, it is ;)
I remember when I was a kid, we moved into a big and very old farm house that had a mose problem. We trapped and poisioned and everything else, but some of the little buggers were just persistent and we would see them from time to time scurrying about.

Dad had an old Ruger .22 pistol that he kept loaded with "rat shot" shells. He would keep it handy while he was watching TV in the evening and if he saw a mouse, he'd call it out to make sure we were all clear and *bang!!* "down went the mouse.

12. I would use a fly swatter if you can see it.
They can only hurt you if they get close enough to bite. Personally I would whack it with a fly swatter or get it on the swatter, place it on the ground & then stomp it.
I am sure there are chemicals that would do it but it is overkill.

25. Go to the hospital.
But I really think, that if you know its there and take clothing precautions, shoes, slacks, long sleeves, gloves, the chances of you getting bit are pretty low.
We had an animal diversity class where the TA went out and found a black widow at the local park and brought it in for us to see it, no problem.

43. Get your entire house tented and fumigated ($2,700) and all of your bug/spider/termite problems
will be solved - for one year anyway! We had our house fumigated on May 21/22 and I have yet to see a single spider in the house, 6 weeks later.

27. Serious answer: suck it up with your vacuum cleaner.
If you have one with a bag, that is. The force of the suction kills most spiders but as an added precaution you should remove the bag and put it in the outside trash bin.

31. Umm, they live there too...
Geographical Distribution Southern black widow Latrodectus mactans (Fabricius)is found in southern New England states to Florida west to eastern Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas being more common in the southern range.
Western black widow L. hesperus (Chamberlin & Ivie)is found in Western Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas north to the adjacent Canadian provinces and west to the Pacific Coast States.
The "brown widow" L. geometricus (C.L. Koch) is found in California and southern Florida and throughout Africa.
The Northern widow L. variolus (Walckenaer) is found in New England and adjacent Canada south to Florida, and west to eastern Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, being more common in the northern part of the range.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also here's better advice on if you are bitten:
First-aid

Apply ice pack, house hold ammonia or alcohol directly to the bite area to relieve local swelling and pain. Apply tincture of iodine or other antiseptic to the site of the bite to prevent infection. Bed rest is indicated. If symptoms appear sever or in the neurotic envenomation of young children, the patient should be taken to a physician at once. Bring along the spider for identification, if possible, should antivenin be available. Antivenin is available to treat some widow spider bites

I have seen rattlesnakes, scorpions, palmetto bugs (more of a nuisance but gross anyway) and black widows here.

32. Locate it and squish it.
Then locate the webs and crush the egg sack and eggs COMPLETELY. Or burn them. Really. They are very sturdy, so even when it looks like the sack is crushed, it may still be protecting the babies.

Bug spray is not very effective (so I'm told by exterminators) because the females are territorial. They will actually move to the next house until the spray is gone - then move back. They will also build multiple webs. Look in the corners both above and below - if you have a tree or bushes near your garage she might have built her web in that.

Large ones can be rather aggressive, particularly if you spray them directly - I had one actually chase me backward about 10 feet after I sprayed it. Freaked me out . . . then it made me mad and I stopped backing up and stomped on it.

Just remember. You have opposable thumbs. They don't have thumbs. Points to you.

Once you have dispatched the intruder, try a perimeter spray around the outside of your house. Respray regularly.

- enlightenment, living in the land of Black Widows, having moved from the land of Brown Recluses (I'll take the Widows any day).

35. I try not to kill anything, but black widows are my limit
I saw them plenty in my childhood in the Mojave Desert/San Fernando Valley. I just used a shoe or stick. They're easy to kill so don't worry, just make sure you have good vision of the spider so if you miss it you can hit it again or run the fuck away.

40. Locate Black Widow Spider,
Edited on Mon Jul-07-08 05:57 PM by Q3JR4
lift foot, put lifted foot above black widow spider, bring foot down and give foot a good twist while listening for squishy noises, pick foot back up and make sure black widow spider is dead. Repeat as necessary.

Method also works pretty well for other varieties of spiders and/or insects.

Q3JR4.

When I lived in LA, we had them in the house some times, and all of the neighbours did too. I never heard of anyone being harmed by them. .... but, as others have said, the good ways, if you want to kill them, are squishing and fire.
