Things you can't do with a shattered ankle |
|
1. Walk 2. Step aerobics 3. Dance 4. Jungle Sex 5. Take out garbage 6. Drive your 5 speed Eclipse 7. Vacuum 8. Hiking 9. ...
Add your own.
I'm in the 7th week of non weight bearing and just starting physical therapy. I can go back to work in 2 weeks. I'm fortunate to have a desk job and an extra vehicle ( a horrible gray van with terrible gas mileage and broken a/c). I can drive myself and I have graduated from a wheelchair to a walker.
Whee!

 I've been feeling sorry for myself because I sprained my wrist two weeks ago. I needed to read your message to see that I have it easy. Are you into alternative or energy medicine? If you are, get back to me. I may be able to give you Reiki medicine this weekend. Take care.

4. I don't think alternative medicine will heal a shattered ankle |
|
I had a metal plate and 15 screws put in it. I would prefer AM! :-)

How did that happen? If it's too traumatic to write about, that's okay. As for alternative medicine, it might just help the natural process of healing. Despite the metal plate and screws, the doctors are counting on the body's natural ability to heal bone, right?

7. I walked up wet steps in flip flops |
|
My foot slipped off and *boom* I was laying on the ground. BF picked me up and put me in the car and to the ER we went. My foot was dislocated and was at a 90 degree angle to the front of my leg.

11. My mom had an external fixator put on today |
|
Ten days ago she broke her right ankle in 3 places at 4:30 AM two days after I left Miami, after helping her recover from a diabetic coma on Christmas Eve. Surgery took several hours today.
I knew that was the dangerous time, late at night when she walks around the house while wobbly and mostly out of it. I always stayed up until the 4 AM range to help her, but once I was gone the house was dark and she stumbled over a doctor's scale and her right ankle got stuck in the bottom of a little table. Her ankle broke in 3 places including bone fragments, one of which they had to leave in there.
The initial procedure to set the ankle failed last week. So they decided to use the external fixator along with pins. At least there's no cast but she has to keep weight off the foot for 6 months which is an unfathomable hurdle. She's 73 and has Parkinsonism so she can't fully grasp everything and forgets even the most important and oft repeated recommendations. I can't imagine she won't wake up and try to walk somewhere.
My dad said the external fixator is about 11 inches wide at one point, so I don't know how that works with changing clothes.

Sleep comfortably Carry things (because you are using crutches/walker/etc) Chase after kids Chase after cats/dogs/ferrets
----------
Wait until you graduate to crutches.
Then you can learn the fine art of Crutch-Fu.
You may not be able to do much else, but metal crutches make fine blunt instruments, and work at a longer distance than a knife or kicking. My sister successfully fended off her psycho ex husband who tried to kidnap her off of our front porch when she sprained her ankle, using the fine art of Crutch-Fu.
Let me know when you wish to be initiated into the Mystical School of the Crutch-Fu, I need to check my schedule...
(Fell better soon!) ^^^^^ Edit: Uh, I mean feel.... I swear....

Nothing like recovering from something like this to make you appreciate the little things we normally do and take for granted, right?
