Digital camera suggestions?

I'm looking for a digital camera as a birthday gift for Ms. OR. I'd like to find something with more capabilities than a usual point & shoot, but still relatively compact. This Fuji FinePix S1000fd looks pretty cool.

I was mostly looking for one that my girlfriend would like. She has the pink and I have the blue, so we look like geekish tourists when we take them out of town.

Plus, Maria never did swing by. Five hundred bucks down the drain. ;)

5. I have a Canon PowerShot A570IS 7.1MP

Great camera so far. I got it from Amazon about 6 months ago for $145, plus an upgrade Kingston memory card.

I researched it and it was the lowest priced Canon that had some recommended features, like a sporting image optimization, or something like that.

The video is surprisingly good.

7. That model has been superceded by the 590.

Which also looks nice.
