Typography Nerd requested.
What's the typeface used in the National Geographic Channel banners at DU? Not the type used with the logo, but the headline/body copy text.

1. Okay, okay
I thought I could be lazy and avoid a screencap and upload to photobucket, but clearly I was wrong.

The sans serif type. What is it?

2. Helvetica?
I don't know.

Maybe it is a Courier font?

3. Not helvetica
It's something else. But thanks.

I'll just kick this tomorrow and annoy more people.

4. Looks like Universe to me.
Considering the theme, it would be appropriate.

5. I don't know what it is, but I can tell you what it is not
It is neither helvetica nor universe, nor is it futura.

Note the straight-legged "R," the slightly squared "O," and the distinctive "9". Also it has a high "x" height.

My guess is it is a variation of news gothic and very possibly specifically designed for National Geographic.

10. Interesting
Although companies these days generally don't like springing for custom typefaces, you could be right.

11. Professional Typesetter chiming in...
Eyeballing it, it looks to be either Futura XBlk BT, Gothic725 Blk BT or Humnst777 Blk BT

 It's tough for me to eyeball a sans-serif typeface, but looking more closely, I think it is Humnst777 Blk BT.

12. DIN Medium/Mittelschrift -- Sample attached
DIN Medium (or DIN Mittelschrift) is almost an exact match.

The type on the bottom was set from my version of the typeface.
