Car Accident Near Cle Elum Leaves Two Dead

CLE ELUM, Wash. -- State Troopers are investigating a car crash that left two people dead and three injured on State Route 10 near Cle Elum.

The accident happened Wednesday evening at about 6:00 p.m. The driver, 63-year-old Wayne Free of Cle Elum, and Alice Young, 86, were killed when their Chevy Tahoe drifted off the road, hit an embankment, and caught fire.

Three other passengers were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Jackie Knowlton, 58, of Brewster, was listed in serious condition Thursday morning. Justin Knowlton, 8, was not buckled in at the time of the crash and was also listed in serious condition. Austin Knowlton, 10, was in satisfactory condition.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The woman I saw was Alice. I suspect Wayne's body may have burned in the car but don't know for sure.

:( We're still a bit freaked out today. It's been talked about a lot at work.

2. Oh Madrone, that had to be awful.
I missed last night's thread, thanks for the follow up and the link. My thoughts go out to the family of those who lost their lives and those injured so badly.

5. I sure hope the kids were shielded from the dead woman.
I can't imagine how scarring that must be - even without seeing people dead. I hope they continue to improve and do well, and I hope their families are okay. :(

9. I hope they didn't see her too.
I hope you're doing ok. It's always a shock to see something like that and sometimes it takes a while to get over. Give yourself time and be gentle with yourself.

6. I'm okay - just a little in shock still.
My main concern is the people involved and their families.

I'm sorry you had to witness a similar situation. It's definitely ... humbling, I guess.

10. Hey I work at Harborview
It's kind of odd reading the newspapers and basically seeing a list of your patients on a daily basis.....

13. Another update -
I "heard" that the woman I saw in the road had been ejected from the vehicle, then struck by another passing car. The man was trapped in the car - in which case I would imagine he was incinerated. It was an INTENSE fire - I got there within minutes of it occurring (before any emergency response) and the car was unrecognizable. Some homes were evacuated due to the fire, and someone's house had some damage.
